SPF+ long distance cables

Wed Apr 15, 2020 8:41 pm

Newbie with SPF+ questions here.
I need to have one SPF+ run on my new CRS328-24P-4S+RM device to go 10Meters. Should I purchase a passive or active cable? Other than cost, any up/downsides to either one? I read somewhere rule of thumb is active optical over 5M. Does this device handle active and passive SPF+ cables? And do some manufacturers have better performance than others?
The NIC I will be connecting to is a D-link DXE-810S
Or should I go with SPF+ to RJ45 modules?
Thanks all, this is a great product.

For 10 meter distance, I would go with multimode fiber and 10GBASE-SR optics. Much cheaper than either an active DAC or 10GBASE-T (I don't know of any 10m passive DACs)

So would that be a complete fiber cable with a 10GBASE-SR transceiver. Or is that different components?

Is this the type of cable you are referring to?
https://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F2CX036-1 ... B008DWBGIW
or
http://www.robofiber.com/sfp-10g-10aoc
or are you referring to seperate componets such as
https://www.ebay.com/itm/CISCO-Genuine- ... SwJtJcF8sY
and
https://www.ebay.com/itm/10M-40G-OM4-LC ... SwZMVc203I
I prefer the cheaper latter, if it will work
Thanks for your response.

I mean the latter. Separate 10GBASE-SR SFP+es and an OM3 or OM4 fiber patch. The optics are a lot cheaper than copper SFP+es, and the cabling is about equal. It's the cheapest option for anything beyond passive DAC range.

Thanks. That is definitely the cheapest way to go.
I will order some. I assume the SFP-10G-SR V03 is just a later release of V02 and not functionally different

If the run does not have any major obstacles.
I have run active dac's up to 20 meters.
Here is a 15 M cable on ebay.

Active DACs, yes.

But they are more expensive than two SR SFP+ modules and a multimode fiber patch cord of the needed length, so why use them (unless you already have them for some reason)?

I will post here how those SR modules and OM4 cables worked out.

mbovenka,
cisco switches, intel cards and any other devices that are finicky about the sfp+ modules.
I do keep a few for just those reasons.
And when I posted the link, the finstars were $16.00 US (now $20). Hard to beat the first or the current price.

There is that, although Fiber Store (and others) will customize their stuff to report just about anything you want. It's not really a problem anymore.

And those Finisars...yeah, they look cheap at first glance. But that's fake. Have you seen the utterly ridiculous shipping costs? These things aren't $20, they are $100.

Don't know about where you are shipping to, but for me it's free shipping.
They could be fake, but I have purchased quite a few Mellanox and Arista cables on ebay and they have all been (so far) the real deal.

By 'fake' I meant the price. The link you gave shows a price of $20, yes, but $63 shipping. I didn't look any further than that.

Those SR modules and OM4 cables worked like a charm. Thanks for the tips.
