We’ve configured a VPN server in a RB4011GS+ and we’ve detected an important fall in bandwidth performance through the tunnel, comparing it with the available Internet bandwidth.

Specifically It has been carried out tests with PPTP and OVPN tunnels, and bringing up only one of that VPNs from a RB1100AHx2 and Internet access with real 300 Mbps, we have obtained only 50 Mbps through the tunnel.

At the beginning I thought It could be happening a microprocessor saturation, or that the OVPN would have an extra load with respect to lighter tunnels. Both cases were discarded because the CPU use never exceeded de 4%, and the performance were similar between both kind of tunnels.

I believe the ISP affects, because performing that same test with other client’s router (RB1100AHx2) and the 300 Mbps Internet access of another provider, we reach 100 Mbps.

Although better, It was far from 300 Mbps. Could It be that regardless the provider, the Mikrotik VPNs do not offer a good performance?
