Any support planned for MIMO?

Mon Feb 21, 2005 4:34 pm

Hi

Does anyone see a need to support MIMO?
Mostly it is used in internal access points, there is an upcoming 802.11n standard.
But there might be advantages outdoors for P2P or P2MP links. One advantange (not in current cards, for future ones I think) is higher throughput, they are talking about 40MHz spectrum and using the guard bands between.
"pre N" Cards are already available - e.g.

I guess a comment would be helpful if anyone can see applications/need for this.

"... With Pre- N, even your existing 802.11b and 802.11g devices will get a boost in range of up to 20%..."

+20% ? Nothing. Wimax will change our networks, but this marketing scene not.

Agreed about range on P2MP indoors, +20% isn't going to win MT users.

But the new modulation formats might for outdoor links, even on the Netgear datasheet it shows new "raw speeds" above the 108Mbps normally claimed for Turbo modes.
Would be interesting if anyone's tried those - perhaps a couple of cards in PCs (no AP) running windows and P2P throughput test....

Regards
