Devices missing labels

Thu Jun 15, 2006 1:37 am

I have a Windows 2003 server and have installed Dude V1.1 however when any devices/networks or other items are added they are all missing their label, i have tried to manually set the label and change the font but all i get is an icon in a square green box with no label.

I have also tried the beta version and had the same problem.

Regards
Andrew

Obviously there are some problems with fonts, can you try to change your fonts used in the dude?

I tried changing the fonts, also uninstalled and installed the non beta version and had the same problem, then reinstalled the beta version but it made no diference at all.

I will try again, and maybe transfer a fint from an XP machine over and see if that works.

I suspect it will not be long before we see a similar problem emerge in XP as i have read a few articles of late and found that there have been many applications with font issues and as a result from what i understand the font issues were causing soem really strange problems. 2k3 being a much more stable platform has more than likley had these issues already reslved and either will not accept or just ignores any funky font call being made.

I am not saying that this is what the problem is but may be worth the developers looking at. Having no labels is a real pain.

Other than that i have foud that those fuly little lockups that used to happen with XP dont hapen on 2k3 and as a whole dude seems a lot more stable running on this platform.

No Labels

Sat Oct 21, 2006 12:01 am

I have upgraded to the new beta version and still have no labels, has any one got any other ideas as to what could be causing this and how the issue could be fixed?

I have experienced the same issue. Our Dude server runs on Windows 2003 Server, and running the client locally results in no labels being displayed (which makes it much harder than you might expect to navigate the maps properly). When connecting to the same server with a Windows XP machine, all is good and the labels appear.

On a note that may or may not help to narrow this issue down for the developers, I experience the exact same issue when using the client under WINE on the latest version of Ubuntu Linux as well (and yes, the core MS Fonts are installed on the Ubuntu machine). If anybody has figured out a workaround for this that can be used until this bug is resolved, please let me know. Dude is by far the easiest network mapper I've used to date, and I'd love to be able to keep it around.

Well, I found an interesting thing upon some further investigation, and I hope this helps the developers some.

In Windows Server 2003, if you log into Windows as 'Administrator', you can see the device labels. However, if you log in as any other user name (even if it has system administrator priviledges, you cannot see the labels). I have no idea what the code looks like on the backend of Dude, but if I had to guess, I'd say that the Dude client is checking to see if the logged in username is 'Administrator' instead of checking to see if the logged in user's *group* is 'Administrator'. I could be completely wrong on this one, but it seems a good direction to go in.

Hi.
I found that copying fonts from windows\fonts to [userprofile]\windows\fonts directory resolves problem.
Maybe it will be helpful, Uldis?

Missing Labels - I think Ive got it

Sun Dec 17, 2006 1:37 am

I believe I know what causes this very strange problem. This also happens with WhatsUp.

When you Remote Desktpop into a 2K3 server with the remote client display set using anything more than 256 colors, all the icons turn into either the regular solid color of the icon, or totally black. Doesnt seem to matter what the native server display resolution is. This is the symptom in WhatsUP.

This can be solved in several ways, some not always working the way they did the last time... Exit the remote desktop connection and re-connect with 256 colors. Sometimes that is all that it takes. In WhatsUp, it sometimes takes opening each map window, and eventually, on the web interface, they will restore to normal. If that doesnt work, you have to restart the application.

I havent seen this in the Dude, but the symptoms you describe are identical to the behavior of WhatsUp on a 2K3 server (only). Ipswitch has never been able to solve this, at least for the rather recent, but legacy version I am using. Seems that for some reason, the video driver interacts with the web server or application, and thats where the trouble starts.

You might wonder why I am still using WhatsUp. Since the web interface of the Dude keeps crashing, I still cant depend on it to stay up. Using the remote client always seems to work however. I havent quite figured out why the web server wont stay up for more than a couple hours. Maybe its because it sees that nasty WhatsUP running...

Hope this solves your problem...

Missing labels

Sun Mar 04, 2007 5:49 pm

Hi

Just like to say great tool....(wait for the but!), but having this same problem, no labels. Running Win2000 Server have tried all the above and still no labels, in fact changing font has, on a couple of occasions, crashed the dude. Any help would be great as having no labels makes this pretty much useless.

Also noticing same problem when logged on a Win2003 Server as a user with administrator rights. When logged in as 'Administrator' account the fonts appear though.. it would be nice to see it working on other administrative accounts too.

Hope to hear more about it soon.

I too experience the same problem, not seeing device labels (from remote desktop).. I can see the labels fine when connecting remotely to the Dude Server (running on Win2k3) from my Windows Vista machine...

It's problems with fonts on Win2k3 you must copy fonts from system folder to userprofile/windows/

Yep that did the trick! I saw that mentioned above, but no one commented on whether it resolved the issue. So yeah its a problem with the fonts directory location, or permissions. Copying to the local user profile works fine.
