LTE - eSim Roaming Issue

Wed Sep 29, 2021 2:44 pm

Hi,
In the main we tend to use LTE Cards on RBM33G boards. We have around 600 installed in and around the UK. We always use eSims from the same provider and majority all work fine but occasionally there is an issue where the eSim doesn’t seem to roam correctly and refuses to change or hunt for the best provider following a reboot. The eSims are all capable of 2G, 3G and 4G and will use Vodafone, O2, Hutchison Three or EE as a carrier ( we are UK based ).

All routers have the roaming box ticked and all run on either the latest or at worse last firmware version which si eh same for the modem FW also..

My question is does anyone have a similar setup where an LTE ( or even 4G ) card is used with an eSIm and do you have problems or does anyone know of any problems on RB OS that will cause roaming to have issues. As mentioned, most all work fine and we never have a problem, its only when it goes wrong that it becomes a bit of a nightmare to resolve and often we have to swap SIMs out to force a new connection.

In my opinion for a RouterOS it's a transparent process.
ROS see a sim and wait until it register to network, if cannot then is always possible to use roaming automatically if main sim allow to switch into roaming.
Case about esim, reprogram it via fota, switch in this esim ISP to other one - those are stuff directly related with esim itself.
I not help with esim for now and not know your Jola esim provider. Some esim have a option to at commands to do swap MNO.. but in Poland we have 2 ISP with eSIM :).

About just roaming we can do a scan listing... to grab MCC nad MNC and select it by /interface lte set lte1 operator=

This is answer what I can get you now, in general terms.

Hi, Just to confirm as i just realised there may be some confusion over the term eSim. These are std remavable Sim Cards, not embedded Sim's like handsets use. The key feature being they are multi-network.

Thanks

I understand that you insert a classical a sim card who is know as Hardware eSIM and this is a programmed sim card who can be used from differ MNO.
This give us a back-compability with device who not support build-in eSIM feature.
Each hardware sSIM card can have the same phone number but this is for LTE purpose not important.

We can say, you have a standard sim card who can "change internal image/partition" by FOTA process and run as other ISP/MNO.
Each ISP/MNO can run directly register to network or resister by roaming feature.

I not understand what you have a problem, seams like your programmed sim MNO cannot use a roaming or you not know how use roaming (check commnand operator= ).

Correct me or write question/problem again if I not answer you.

I am confident roaming is working because when a new SIM is used it will hunt for the best network and connect. Is there a way to check roaming via AT commands.

The problem we have is once the router has connected first time to a network it doesn't seem to roam again when rebooted.

The routers are built in our warehouse and then installed at a later date so when moved we need them to check again for best network and also when rebooted. Is there a way to force this?

Sorry but I never use roaming and any of my installation not use it even by auto-switch to roaming.
Ones I use separate sim from ISP who allow to roam to check feature but I must force roaming by selecting a operator= . I not remember the flag or someting what show that I am connected by roaming. I think the +COPS should show a ISP from roaming as at command.
