Yes, this happens sometimes and can be very annoying. The solution is to do a manual update as described on these pages:
I would also recommend disabling (and not updating) the parts you aren't using (e.g.: If you don't use IPv6 then disable it and don't upgrade it).

I've purchased HUNDREDS of these and have never had to do anything before. This is BS. I can do netinstall but this crap takes FOREVER. Sometimes I have to do dozens at a time. (I upgrade and configure all routers BEFORE I deploy them).
Simple. If this happens again, MK is going to lose a customer. PERIOD.
If MK wants to cheap out and not stick enough memory in these units, then I'll cheap out and not give them any more money.

No worries. Plenty of people have been asking when MikroTik are going to increase the flash size from 16MB to something sensible (like at least 64MB or even 1GB). Five units to upgrade manually is a pain but, when you're talking 100s, MikroTik really need to fix the problem of too little storage space.For the record, I appreciate your response. While I think the minimum amount of flash should be higher 64M or 128M and Ram should start at 128M, this would increase the cost of the devices.
In your case you reference the hap light which is basically the cheapest device mt sells (along with the hap mini) at $20 usd. It only has 16M of flash - like many devices but only has 32M ram and a limited CPU/chipset. To get to the ideal ram / flash size with a supprted CPU would double the price(at least).
Do I think what they did with these devices is right- no. But it is a $20 device. I spent more on a cheap Bluetooth speaker.

Which certainly is not a 20$ cheap device, and its absolutely disgusting if you ask me that im supposed to climb remote locations to access device and do net install because i cant upgrade new mikrotik device to latest RouterOS in easy and automated way...

16M of flash is really too small no matter what. I was trying to point out that the smips devices have more issues than the rest due to limited flash and memory.
Outside of the smips devices I have not had issues upgrading 6.x. Going to 7.x I had issues but that is because I used separate packages. I have to remove the wireless package and then I can upgrade to 7.x. It is a hassle, especially when these devices are not hard wired to my network (wireless bridge).
Again - 16M flash is too small no matter what.

The problem with 16MB flash devices is that one doesn't know they're tooth picks until one engages in knife fight ... MT nowhere warns that these devices might have problems with upgrading ... and rightfully so because problems are entirely on owners
But then these devices are quite old now and most vendors wouldn't even try to support v7 on them .. here lies MT's guilt. No v7 on SMIPS, no upgrade problems ... simple as that. Another thing is v6 upgrades, they should be really working hard not to screw that ...This is different than whining about wifiwave2 drivers not being available for hAP ac2 because these drivers are optional (theoretically wireless works without those drivers, 2.4GHz specially so).

Even 500$ device like Chateau 5G only features 16MB flash. So it is not a cheap-ass thing only. More like a Scrooge thingy.

Devices with 16MB flash might have been OKish for low end products few years ago, but it's really not good to get the same limited resources on new hardware introduced in 2021 that cost $200+.
There have been some excuses how used Qualcomm chipset/cpu can't use more than 16MB flash... but there are devices on the market that DO have more than 16MB of flash. After some investigation it seems this limitation is ONLY for bootloader, so easiest solution is to have small 64kB SPI flash for just that and then you can load kernel and system from any bigger flash. 256MB? 1GB? no problem.
Then they said "What you even need bigger flash for?"... good point for some... except then wave2 wifi package was released and it became painfully obvious what we need that bigger flash for.
This should have been solved years ago, but no... instead Mikrotik released more and more devices with 16MB flash and spent countless hours trying to squeeze latest features into this small space... only to fit ROS just barely so every byte matters and this can result in update failure.
Congratulations! You just saved $1 of BOM cost in exchange for a lot of more work spent during development on this issue and pissing off good amount of your customers with broken updates. They may never buy Mikrotik again.
It's one thing to make a mistake, everyone does that sometimes... but it's another thing to not learn from your mistakes and to keep doing same stupid stuff over and over again.
I'm looking forward to next MIkrotik Newsletter where they will surely announce some cool new hardware for 2022... what are the chances some of it will still have 16MBs of flash? Sadly I'd say it's almost certain... let's dig that hole a bit deeper, why not?

With that name, maybe they can one-up Ubi and only have ax on the 6GHz band, leaving 2.4GHz on n and 5GHz on a subset of ac wave 2 features (first two Unifi 6 products had ax only on 5GHz, with a much older radio for 2.4GHz).Capac6E

It depends. If you manage to get it signed by enough people who buy MikroTik devices by thousands, it might work. But if thousand people threaten MikroTik by saing that they won't buy their one new home AP, which they plan for this year, or maybe next one, but surely not later than in 2024, unless it has more than 16MB of storage, it probably won't have much impact.
