Which RouterBoards/routers have USB3-compatible mPCIe slots? (If any)

Fri Jan 21, 2022 4:43 pm

As stated in the title. I'm interested in trying 5G modules but I currently have RBM11Gs which are fine but I suspect limited by a USB 2.0 bus in their mPCIe slots. That's a theoretical 480mbps throughput limit even before accounting for the many other factors involved (processing etc.).

I'm willing to try other products even if I have to take them apart and pull the boards out. Suggestions welcome!

RB5009UG has pads for two M.2 sockets on the motherboard, one of them USB. The sockets are not soldered, but this probably means that future RB500x models will include sockets and radios.

Interesting but I'm not that confident in my soldering skills :-D

I'm really looking among currently available products though.

Any ideas folks? The only product I can be sure of is LtAP (full size, not mini). One of its mPCIe slots is documented as being USB 3.0.

AFAIK, no official mPCIe spec includes USB 3.0. For USB 3.0 speeds (now called USB 3.2 gen 1, 5Gbps), it's electrically similar to PCIe 2.0 in some aspects, so I suspect most would have just used PCIe unless there were good reasons not to.

From the factory the EP06 lte card that we use required the USB 3 pins to work otherwise you have to either disable them in the settings otherwise it will not even show up under the PCIE stats window.
I have tested these cards in the LHGR, WAPgr and the larger version of the LTAP and it looks like these 3 boards should have the USB 3 pins on the card slot :)

MT Boards with chips like IPQ40xx chipsets are USB3 compatible, just need to check they have a minipcie interface and away you go..
e.g : https://www.qualcomm.com/products/ipq4019

MT boards like : AP ac(RBwAPGR-5HacD2HnD) are what your looking for :)

Remember to look at the chipset datasheets to see whats likely compatible.
