Assigning CPE IP's with names instead of MAC addresses

Mon Mar 14, 2005 12:24 pm

Hi There,

Does anyone know if there is a possibility in MT to assign ip numbers to a customer not by using the dhcp server in combination of his MAC-address, but just giving the customers pc or router a unique computername with corresponds with a central MT-server?

Thanks,

Arco

I suppose you talk about something like PPPoE or PPTP. There the user/router/CPE has to authenticate with a username (the "name" of the CPE) and a password in order to be able to use your service (i.e. get an ip address etc.)...

No,

I do not use any authentication.

I just want to give the pc/router name on the client side a unique number. This number has to be recognized by a dhcp server, giving the right ip-stack automaticaly.

Arco,

A IP Address must always be bounded to a MAC adress (ARP). Regardless of what way you go (DHCP, Static Routing, PPTP, PPPoE, etc), the MAC address will always form part of it.

If you already have IP addresses assigned to your CPE, then you can possibly use DNS? to mask the number to a name of your choice...
