Which router fits my needs?

Wed Jul 13, 2022 10:54 pm

So far, I've only purchased cAP ac access points. I will want a new (prosumer) router in the coming weeks to replace an aging Asus router that never made it very easy to do some of the things I want.

Specifically, I'd like to do multi-wan between two fiber internet service providers. Both are GPON protocol, and I'd rather not have to deal with the mess that will be their ONTs.

Is there a Mikrotik router that has two or more SFP/SFP+ ports? Is there such a router that is smaller (not rackmount width) and won't break my budget (maybe up to about $500)?

There seem to be several devices that have two such ports, but these are listed in the Switches category on the product selection page.

The RB5009 would be a good choice...
It has an SFP+ port and a 2.5Gbps Ethernet Port...
The newer model has POE in/out on all of its ports as well https://mikrotik.com/product/rb5009upr_s_in

Even though it has only the one SFP+, I've considered it... but here in the United States, I can't find anyone that has any stock. I'm waiting until September at minimum. I'd really like to plug the fibers for both services directly into the device rather than having another external ONT.

be aware MikroTik equipment do not replace xPON ONT you will still need xPON ONT of your providers

I was under the impression that I could purchase an SFP module that was an ONT. It's not about it being an all-in-one solution, so much as having it all in a single chassis rather than having another little box plugged into the router with a cable going between the two. Various manufacturers make ONTs that are SFP, is it unsafe to assume they are compatible?

compatibility can be a problem, not guarantee, still your providers have to agree to accept ONT provided by you on their networks, most providers don't allow that

I agree with @chechito,
I don't think you can directly connect the Fiber on your device bypassing the ONT of your provider...

I am willing to make the attempt. Even if I can't, then I still have a better router than the crappy Asus I'm currently using.

But for those of you who find this and are curious:

I've already ordered the SFP modules off of Aliexpress, they're about $50USD each. Apparently there aren't any affordable SFP+ XGPON modules out there, or I'd maybe get one of those too.
