SNMP

Wed Jun 30, 2004 10:37 pm

Hi!

If anyone has experience with or a link to a (preferably freeware/open source - OS is NOT important) SNMP tool, I would be really, really happy.

I need this to collect info from a large (!) network of Mikrotik AP's as well as other units, such as web and mailservers, switches, and such.

The tool should be able to send alerts to a cellphone - but this is NOT a demand. ;)

I have been looking for this for quite some time now, but has yet to find a decent solution.

I am also interested in commercial software, but this has to be priced in an affordable level. Nothing like Tivoli, Openview, and such. ;-)

Please don't point me to sourceforge or any place like that unless you really have tried the tools. There are zilllions of 0.4beta-versions of misc. tools, but I would really like something people have tried - that works. :-D

Best regards,
Denial Sander

We've used IPSentry for years now and love it. The alerting options are full featured, as well as many add-in modules to query for, like snmp, modem, temperature, mrtg values, etc.

Comercial wise (and short of being a full-blown NMS like OpenView), we have had good luck with IPSwitch's WhatsUpGold.

But is it possible to configure WhatsUP to connect actively to the Mikrotik AP? Since Mikrotik does not send traps the monitoring system need to read the SNMP info from the box.

We use this currently on IPSentry. Here is the page that talks specifically about how to poll an SNMP OID and then take action based on what it finds acceptable. You can even import your MIB files for things to make finding the right OID easier.

You configure what the thresholds are and then set the alerts you want to happen. PS. I think there is a free version now, but I dont know if it includes SNMP addin...

On the subject of SNMP does anyone have a working MRTG config file I could steal for the Mikrotik that shows CPU, RAM and Disk usage? as I'm having serious trouble setting it up..

thx

Hi, Sam!

Thanks for the reply. I've been fiddling with IPSentry and it looks fine. But I do have a problem. :-(

When I read the OID of "Interfaces.ifNumber" I get 9 on one of the boxes. This number is correct. But I cannot get IPSentry to read the

Interfaces.ifDescr.1
Interfaces.ifDescr.2
Interfaces.ifDescr.3
Interfaces.ifDescr.4

and so. I get no values returned. By using snmpwalk, I manage to read the values. I can also read the values by using WhatsUP Gold and other programs.

Please advice on this if you know any workarounds.

Best regards,
DS

SNMP View 2.5

We use SNMPView.
Very simple to read stats from your router and publish.
