XR5 frequent disconnects when adjusting power

Sun Nov 18, 2007 1:47 pm

My machine (rc10 x86) is access point with XR5, and the link has nstream with exact size 4000
There is only one client with 2.9.27 and a cm6
When the txpower is at default the link works for hours with tx/rx signal -38/-45 and noise -91

when i try to lower the power of xr5 at mikrotik rc10 x86 from the default value to 20
the connection becomes very unstable . The tx signal fluctuates betwen -45 and -85
and the noise fluctuates betwen -91 and -111 within milliseconds.
The client connects for a second and immediately
disconnects in an endless loop.

If the client becomes AP and i client the same situation.

The link was working fine before with 2.9.xx at both sides (with half of the tx power i use at 3rc10)

Not sure if you were aware of the power offset. I believe this still applies to V3. I have read setting the power above the default(18) can cause some strange behavior.

You may also want to call Ubiquiti directly. I have been told they are really nice. They may have a more concise answer.

Actually by putting 20 i LOWER the power. The default is more than this (i have to check exactly how bigger)

If i go less than 20 then it can not connect at all.
With the default (around 22 but i will check the exact value)) my client has a signal of -38
With 20 the signal fluctuates betwen -45 and -85 within milliseconds!!!
It seems like the radio is almost switched off and on consequently within fractions of a second

That's because you're overdriving the radio significantly and causing it to fail. With the offset, you're realy trying to push 30dBm over a radio that only wants to do 26 or 28.

If you want the radio to do 20dBm, set it to 10dBm in Mikrotik.

Good luck.

I verify the transmit power of the radio by the signal my client receives me.
As i told you, when i put default Mikrotik reports a value of 22(12 dbm) and my client receives me at -38
When i put transmit level 20 , mikrotik reports transmit power of 10dbm and my client receives me at -45 for few millisecons,
then -85 then -45 again etc
If i put transmit power lower than that (i tried many values 17, 15 , 10 , 0 ) mikrotik reports 7, 5, 0 ,0 dbm and my client
does not receive me at all.

Previously with 2.9.48 and a cm9(which has one sixth of the transmit power of an xr5) i used a value of 10 and my client received me at -45 ....

Unfortunately it is not possible to use 2.9.xx now, as it does not support the lan chipset of my new board

Found the problem....
It was a device that protects from thunders that was causing the problem
It is for one use only and probably the gas inside it was damaged due to
a thunder without me noticing.
Now removed and no more disconnects

There is no RC12 at the moment. Is this a typing error on your part?

nope, there will be rc12 out shortly. Just saying rc12 has a fix for this.

I think that may be a bad idea!!

"Warning, v3rc12 has an error when upgrading the x86 version.
There are no know issues for v3rc12 when upgrading RouterBOARDS.
Please wait for for v3rc13."
