Mikrotik PPPOE Server and UserManager Problem

Fri Jan 04, 2008 11:41 am

Hi

I have a test network setup as follows:

Routerboard 112 with 2 wireless interfaces and 1 x ether interface

Ip address of ether1= 192.168.12.3
I have not assigned an IP address to WLAN1 but have a PPPOE server running on this interface with local address =192.168.3.1 and
remote address range=192.168.6.1-192.168.6.254

WLAN2= disabled

I have a laptop connected to WLAN1 with PPPOE client setup for internet access.

I also have user manager running on a routerboard 133 with IP adress 192.168.12.2 and connected to ether1 of routerboard112.

Username and password has been setup on usermanager.

The PPPOE server attributes on RB 112 have been setup to reach the usermanager server on RB 133 with IP address 192.168.12.2

The problem that I am experiencing is that the PPPOE server would not issue an IP address to the customer if the PPPOE server and Radius server are not in the same IP address range. I got this to work before in the same IP address range.

The radius server cannot find the PPPPOE server address before the first customer has not been authenticated because the PPPOE server local address are dinamically assigned.

However when I created a username and password in the local PPPOE "secrets" database, the authentication works fine.

So it's a bit like the chicken or egg first scenario.

What I would like to do when I get this setup to work is to have a radius server at the NOC on the backbone and an PPPOE server on each sector antenna of the tower.

Any help getting the setup to work will be greatly appreciated.
