DSL + 3g usb modem as failover.

Sun Nov 22, 2015 12:58 pm

Hi,
Could someone share with me 100 % fully work "how to" instruction how to configure 3g/usb modem to work as backup internet gateway ?

This is what I want to achieve.

1.Scenerio

I have one mikrotik with 1xdsl and 1x 3g/usb dongle.
I want to switch automatically internet connection to 3g/usb dongle in case if dsl connection break.

My idea is to use ddns to always have access to my router no matter which ISP will be used.

Additionally I would like keep all port forwarding rules , no matter which ISP will be used.

Behind NAT I have some services which I share through internet to my customers.

2. Scenerio

Actually main goal to have failover between dsl and 3g/usb will stay as it's but this time I don't need to move NAT port forwarding rules between both "WAN" connections. I will use ddns only and VPN serwer.
So I need to know how to properlu configure failover between dsl and 3g/usb dongle. When dsl connection will return I want to switch back internet connection to dsl to avoid using expensive telco network by 3g/usb dongle.

I found this in the manual using the keyword "3g" as a search.

Actually it's not answer on my question because I am not looking for instruction how to configure 3g modem.
I am looking for how to configure failover.

This what I achieve since now is to configure two wan interfaces , dsl+3g.
And I forced router to mark outgoing traffic as default by setting "distance" in routing table.
So simply dsl outgoing traffic has "1" distance and 3g has "2" distance what is working pretty fine for me.
I am wondering if there are better solutions, like turning off 3g till dsl will fail ?
