Packet loss, cured by using the Packet Sniffer

Fri Jul 08, 2016 3:43 pm

Hi there,

I recently bought a RB3011 for my site. I configured a loadbalancing setup for two internet providers (like described here Slide 1 - tomas.pdf )
Most of the time, the setup works quite fine. But then, after a couple of hours, I experience a lot of packet retransmissions on the second line,
so the WWW isn't usable any more. Some (not all) sites are not reachable.

But, when I try to catch the problem, I started the Packet Sniffer on the uplink which immediately remedies the problem. No retransmissions,
no packet loss any more. After stopping the Sniffer, the problem is back again.

What could cause such problems?

Probably starting the Sniffer enables a promiscuous mode, may be that helps. Or it disables or modifies the check sum offloading.

Any ideas?

It can be caused by fasttrack or fastpath. When you enable sniffer, those features are disabled.

Hello, I found only one dealer in the US that sells thr RB3011. How can I purchase this product and get the 30days support? The resellers seem to not be able to provide adquite support. I want to use this router to build a broadband system for a small residential building and need to be sure that I can fix bugs and errors with support available during the first 30 days of use.

Mikrotik provides support for devices that are years and years old. If you find a bug and you report it to support they may look into it.
It might take a long time to get a fix (or event a response) but they almost certainly are not going to refuse to provide support just because the device is over 30days old.

Granted, the Mikrotik support is not great, you'll probably need to nag them a few times before they acknowledge a problem and fix it.
This is the case in general, not just for the 3011 model.

Thank you, I might have to go with Ubiquiti, no phone support, bue they have wizard software and they respond immediately via chat. Mikrotik seems to be more flexible as android is to apple, but that's no good when you have paying customers to correct issues for. On the Mikrotik site, the one US Florida number they only for sales, no one ever answers or returns calls, smh. Not the way I do business.

Hi 'Aicom' ,

My experience with MikroTik is : When you stuble upon a reproducable bug, they will do their best to fix that a.s.a.p. They respond in a timely manner via mail in that case.

But when using MikroTik, they expect you to know how it works.. No 'point and click' here!

MikroTik can do what you want to buid, if you need support then you can call one of the many Consultants listed on the website (or you can search the Forums here).

Best regards,

Menno

I have similar problem with this model.
1st port is master, 2-4 are slaves. 5st port is not in group but 1st and 5st are in bridge br0. I also have a vlan attached to port 5 with external ip address and gre tunnel between external ip and outside server.
When i try to use this tunnel for tcp sessions (such as http) i have packet loss.
It looks like:
[local machine] -> tcp syn -> [mikrotik 3011] -> vlan(gre(tcp syn)) -> [mikrotik switch] -> gre(syn) -> [external gw nat] -> syn -> [destination server]
[destination server] -> tcp syn ack -> [external gw nat] -> gre(tcp syn ack) -> [mikrotik switch] -> vlan(gre(tcp syn ack))-> [mikrotik 3011] -> tcp syn ack -> [local machine]
[local machine] -> tcp ack-> [mikrotik 3011] -> vlan(gre(tcp ack)) -> [mikrotik switch] -> gre(tcp ack) -> [external gw nat] -> tcp ack-> [destination server]
[local machine] -> tcp http GET /-> [mikrotik 3011] -> vlan(gre(tcp http GET)) -> [mikrotik switch] -> gre(tcp http GET) -> [external gw nat] -> tcp http GET-> [destination server]
[destination server] -> tcp seq 1-xxx -> [external gw nat] -> gre(tcp seq 1-xxx) -> [mikrotik switch] -> vlan(gre(tcp seq 1-xxx))-> [mikrotik 3011] -> tcp seq 1-xxx -> [local machine]
[local machine] -> tcp seq 1-xxx ack -> [mikrotik 3011] -> nothing here -> [mikrotik switch]
So ack packet loss in 3011.
First of all i started packet sniffer and magically all started to work!
Then i stoped sniffer and just disabled Fastpath for bridge and after that all connections work.
