Getting the signal past thick walls

Thu Jul 21, 2016 9:51 pm

Hi

A hotel owner has called upon a series of different service providers to
improve the wifi signal distribution in his establishment. It is currently
my turn to take a stab at this 'challenge'.

The current hotspot/main-access-point on the ground floor is situated
at one end of his building; not ideally/centrally situated at all.

I initially wanted to place a few wAPs here and there and realized that
the thick walls might force me to install a greater number of wAPS than
I was hoping to install.

I'm wondering however if an RB433 with a panel antenna, or even an SXT,
might do just as well in dispersing the signal through out the ground floor
of his hotel.

I know, nothing beats a survey to determine whether one solution is
more viable than another but, who knows, maybe some of you have
some insight on which solution might be more appropriate.

To get a better idea, here is the floor plan of the hotel:

thanks
yann

Survey is paramount!

There is special feeder cable called "Leaky CoaX".  We used LCX cable in a tunnel between buildings and worked fine.
Thick concrete along with all the iron strength rods with corners ("Z" shaped) in the tunnel made multiple APs too costly.  The cable
was placed in plastic pipe along the path and terminated at the end.  Tell us more about the ceiling construction.

Keep in mind that hotel users are usually heavy on streaming video services.  So you may still need multiple APs and
a good ISP to make the customer happy.

Just note that it is single antenna with single radio for huge amount of clients. For hotel more access points with small tx power would be better. Take the cheapest hap lite and put it everywhere with regulated tx power, use capsman and be happy.
