Compatibility with 4G LTE Global USB Modem U620L

Wed Jul 27, 2016 4:41 am

I have the 24 port Cloud Router (CRS125-24G-1S-2HnD-IN) and would like to setup a backup Internet access using the MiFi® 4G LTE Global USB Modem U620L from Verizon Wireless. This is not listed in the compatibility list. Has anyone successfully used the U620L from Verizon? If not, can anyone suggest a good solution for a wireless backup WAN to use on the Cloud Router?

Thank you!

It looks like Novatel Wireless U620L LTE modems uses rndis and cdc_ethernet drivers If you can attach that modem to RouterOS Device  and make supout.rif we can try to add support in RouterOS
Send it to support@mikrotik.com

Proxicast makes a tiny device cellular modem bridge called the PocketPORT 2. You can plug just about any USB cellular modem in one end and an Ethernet cable into the other end. The Ethernet cable can then be a WAN source for any router.

See http://proxicast.com/products/products.htm for details.

Hi guys,

Any news with U620L ?

I'm trying to set it with RB2011UiAS-2HnD with no luck ... it shows under Resources/USB as "Novatel Wireless", "MiFi USB620L" ........ and that's all I could do.

Do we have an update? I have a 951G and a U620L on-hand right now if we need a support.rif.

I am currently running 6.39rc54. I have successfully gotten the U620L to connect with the router. However, after about 5 minutes, LTE Link1 goes down and my IP drops out. Rebooting the router works again, but only for a short period of time. Anyone have any ideas on how to keep the LTE1 link up?

From other threads this won't work on an ARM based device? (I.e. 3011)

Can you expand on that a bit? I was under the impression that the U620L was supported from RC40 forward.

Are you saying that my RB951G-2HnD is ARM based , and therefore it will not work?

It does work for brief periods, but drops the dhcp-client IP address.

I was just asking for myself. I have a 3011 and when I plug the 620 in nothing appears. I read in another thread that the ARM based units don't have the necessary software to support USB modems. Obviously since your router sees the modem it has the required elements.

However, I'm running the Bug-fix build so it might be too old.

Alright. So I updated my 3011 to the latest RC and sure enough it now sees the 620. It identifies it as VZW LTE and I even see little blips of data in the TX/RX graphs.

Now.... I don't know how to tell if it's staying connected or how to tell my router that this is a failover WAN. Does the OS know that automatically?

Re: Compatibility with 4G LTE Global USB Modem U620L

Just obtained a used Novatel U620L (USB620L) modem and it's working perfectly with my hAP ac Lite.

I first plugged the U620L in a Windows laptop in order to access the modem's building-in web console to set the modem to auto-connect to the cellular network.

Next I plugged the modem into my hAP ac Lite's USB port and after maybe 30 seconds it was recognized and configured in ROS. The modem auto connected to the cellular network and it just works! The modem's web console is still accessible through the hAP ac Lite ("http://my.usb" or "192.168.1.1").

I'm using ROS v6.38.5 stable.

I'm also very much interested in this Verizon USB modem MiFi U620L.

I was not able to get it to work on my RB951Ui-2HnD. The modem would be recognized
in system resources > usb, it would get a private 192.168.1.2 address, then shortly after
it would get a public ip, then it would eventually disappear form usb devices list. During the
time a public ip was available, I could never get it to pass packets. I tried several Router OS
versions including latest as of Jun 16 2017 (6.39.2) along with 6.38.5 all with same behavior
described above and earlier post regarding ARM architecture.

Is this modem CPU dependent? I have no issues getting it to work on hEX (RB750Gr3), running
latest 6.39.2.

Is it possible to get a list of compatible RouterBoard devices that will work, or some sort of
explanation on prerequisites/dependancies?

Hmm, I'm now realizing the description for the hAP AC lite says "USB 3G/4G modem" support, which
an earlier poster says this modem works on hAP AC lite. The descriptions for both RB750Gr3
and the RB951Ui-2HnD don't mention USB modem support, while the modem works in the RB750Gr3
but not the RB951Ui-2HnD. Is the issue the Atheros CPU in the RB951Ui-2HnD causing the problem?

Well I just did more testing. I started with an out of the box RB951Ui-2HnD. I performed the following:
  • Added dhcp-client to lte1 with default route and peer dns enabled
  • created interface list "allWAN" to include Eth1 + Lte1
  • changed three default firewall rules input, forward, NAT where Eth1 was referenced and changed to addressList "allWAN"
This seemed to work fine, so there seems to be a configuration conflict with my deployed RB951Ui-2HnD. I tried disabling
my IPSEC peer and Policy, which seemed to allow the USB modem to pass packets, but not for very long (maybe a few minutes).
I will need to to some trial and error to see what is causing conflict and making the USB modem break connection with USB bus.
