New CPU - new product RB750Gr3 - RB750G family - now mmips

It looks like the RB750Gr2 is now EOL. Our latest Mikrotik shipment arrived and we received a new part # RB750Gr3. This is the 4th major revision in the RB750G family since it was announced in 2009.

October 2009 - RB750G
May 2011 - RB750GL
July 2015 - RB750Gr2 aka hEX
October 2016 - RB750Gr3 aka hEX

There is no RB750Gr3 data sheet available yet. A quick comparison looking with winbox shows:

RB750Gr2
CPU - MIPS 74Kc V5.0 720MHz Single Core
RouterOS Family MIPSBE (supported for the past 8 years - many products)
RAM - 64MB
Flash - 16MB

RB750Gr3
CPU - MIPS 1004Kc V2.15 880MHz (Quad Core - depth of multicore support not yet known)
RouterOS Family MMIPS (new as of RB750Gr3)
RAM - 256MB
Flash - 16MB
external micro SD slot and card support

RB750Gr3 ships with RouterOS version 6.36.1. The CPU is also a new MIPS variant (mmips) that just gained Mikrotik support so older RouterOS versions will not work with this model router. (mmips was just added to the RouterOS download section today.)

Enjoy,

Tom

Wow, 720MHz single core to 880MHz quad core seems like a huge boost for a "revision". Very curious how this translates into real world performance.

What is the CPU in this device? Does it support hardware encryption for ipsec?

The CPU spec seems to line up with MediaTek MIPS 1004KeC processors. Maybe MMIPS is short for MediaTek MIPS ???

IF it is MediaTek then it has hardware crypto with support for up to 200mbit/s crypto acceleration.

Thanks Normis.

So it is dual core and not quad core? Wondering why system/resources shows 4 cpus.

Please tell us more.

Ok I see that hEX is RB750Gr2... a little confusing, those marketing names, especially when there is
no 1:1 mapping between marketing names and technical names. Would it not be better to call it
"hEX plus" or something?

When you look at the cars - "BMW 320" marketing name also remains unchanged during the years, just car is different :), and have different production code. Same happens here with "hEX", it avoid lots of confusion about what to choose when old ones run out of the stock - sticking to same marketing name also gives a little bit easier time at customs and certifications, as you always can refer to previous model.

Of course it replaces it by the confusion what we will receive when we order hEX from a local supplier, and the complaints here that older firmware
that people have validated for use on their network cannot be used on newly ordered hEX routers.
(of course that already happened even when there was no drastic change in model...)

Well, it looks like an interesting router but we will probably have to wait a while before we can safely order it (without risk of getting a Gr2 instead)

I'd really like to buy this, but using the same model name is very annoying when you have to deal with distributors who aren't aware of this or co-mingle their inventory. Same deal with the RB850Gx2, one version has HW encryption, one does not, but it's impossible to tell from model name. It may be a long time before our local distributors sell out the RB750Gr2 stock, so I have no way of ordering one other than simply waiting and hoping their stock runs out :(.

I predict that sooner or later there will be issues installing/upgrading RouterOS and additional packages inside the 16MB.
I don't think there will be support for software installation on the SD card, that would break the security of RouterOS.
When the mighty new RouterOS v7 is released with all those new features, it will not fit....

We list them as RB750Gr2 and RB750Gr3. Not hEX. We do have both in stock and they are listed as different products. Our RB750Gr2 supply is limited and will probably be gone this week.

Talk to your distributors. Although this change caught us by surprise, we did catch it and we are usually on top of changes like this. We knew which RB850Gx2 boards had hardware encryption and which did not. And we quickly sold out of the old version at a reduced price when the encrypted model became available.

The easy thing to do is call your distributor and ask them. Most are human. And you might be surprised what they know. :)

I have not tried that yet. I order my MikroTik stuff at a generic "router webshop" that sells 25 different brands of routers and
does not even show MikroTik when you open the default page for routers. Probably a good thing, you don't want to sell these
to the typical family looking for a router for their cable internet...

I see that the item now shows in the shop as "MikroTik hEX RB750GR2", I think they recently added that RB part, other new
types with marketing names like "hAP lite" don't mention the specific product code in the item title.

A few words of warning about Micro-SD cards.

If you are going to store "The Dude" database on micro-sd you would be wise to use a MLC based Micro-SD card.

If you use one of the Sandisk Ultra / Samsung EVO / Cheap Junk Micro-SD cards you will likely wear it out very quickly.

Known "Good" MLC Micro-SD cards are:
Sandisk High Endurance Series (white card)
Transcend High Endurance Series (silver card)
Lexar 300x UHS-I
Lexar 633x UHS-I
Samsung PRO Series
Transcend Ultimate 600x UHS-1

Our gr3s shipped on September 29th. They were on back order before that. I would suspect that is the "release date". You will have to ask your distributors in Moscow. Mikrotik has not yet officially announced it to distributors in our newsletter so many are not yet aware of the change. Although it was announced in the Mikrotik new products presentation recently at MUM in Russia.

I really can't understand lack of USB in 750 and 850gx2 (and sfp cage in this).

Well it was already written that it has a MT7621A.
Just google for that and you'll find it includes a 5-port gigabit switch.
Most likely it is VLAN-capable so they use this in the usual manner to create a configurable switch that you can use as a switch or that can provide individual ethernet ports with the whole VLAN stuff out of sight in the config.

Yes, hw encryption works for all aes-cbc algorithms.
Related question, if I have both aes-128-cbc & aes-256-cbc selected in IPSec proposal, is there any way to know which one is used? Enryption tab in IPSec SA says only "aes cbc".

strongest will be preferred. You can see which one exactly is picked by enabling ipsec logs, or counting how long are keys in SAs :)

Hej
Dual-Core 880 MHz, MIPS1004Kc etc.. similar specification as Ubu EdgeRouter . Hmmm...Interesting.
The difference is that EdgeRouter X has 256 MB NAND. EdgeOS might need 256 MB of storage space to fit all applications. :)

Can someone confirm that it supports the usual VLAN switching in hardware?

Reason why I'm asking, is that Ubiquiti edgerouter-x only does it in software, while openwrt supports VLANs on same chipset just fine.

Also, I don't see it in stock on European Amazon sites or with e.g. eurodk or senetic, but I do see it with some smaller etailers like e.g. linitx.com , anyone have any idea how long these usually take to trickle through?

Hi.

Is the new RB750Gr3 metarouter-capable ? Or this router counts as multicore... and I should wait for ROs 7.x to support metarouter ?

It is the CPU MT7621A
From: http://www.mediatek.com/en/products/con ... /mt7621na/

We can see that MT7621A is:
Dual-core Network Processor for 2x2/3x3/4x4 11ac platform
MediaTek MT7621A Wi-Fi SoC contains a powerful 880 MHz MIPS® 1004KEc™ dual-core CPU, a 5-port Gigabit Ethernet switch, and a rich array of connectivity options including RGMII, PCIe, USB, SD-XC, and so on.

Why R&D of MikroTik didn't put at least USB and Wi-Fi in the new product.

We know that you can do that.

Lots of MikroTik fans will Love to see such a product.

Anyway - you already have this product. but we all want to know if there are any plans to have a product with such capabilities (DualCore/HW accel, WiFi, USB3, etc.) in the future? Maybe under hAP series?

Thanks

It is still too early for anyone to give you a real answer on that.

MediaTek have an SDK that they provide all manufacturers, so stability is likely to be similar.

RouterOS has a better overall feature set, but EdgeRouterX has a better IPSEC feature set due to their use of StrongSwan (IKEv2 and VTI spring to mind as features EdgeOS has that RouterOS does not)

Haha, just leave us guessing then ;)

My guess is that v7 will replace MetaRouter with KVM on MIPS, and possibly ARM. There is no reason you could not store the VM images on Micro-SD in the RB750Gr3

Maybe the mode switch is for: "other helpful features include a USB port for attaching extra storage or a 3G/4G modem" and I read this in the specifications of the hAP ac.

I really love my RB750Gr3 because it is so fast and has a very low CPU usage. It replaced my RB750gR2 which I keep now as physical backup.

A fellow forumer (from another forum) has tested few pieces of this new hEX. His tests show some limit of about 600 Mbit/s on-direction rate (BTest with TCP).
I'm more interested in more basic home usage with a gigabit internet connection. RB951G currently is able to carry (route) about up to real-life 950Mbit/s in a defconf configuration with few more FW rules and mangles. With fasttrack disabled the upper limit for me is about 300Mbit/s. All this is with TCP (FTP, HTTP transfers etc.)
Does the new hEX support fasttrack and is it really only able to route up to about 600Mbit/s in real life (TCP transfers) between internet and LAN? Anyone with real-life gigabit tests out there?
Thanks.

Would love hw encryption for aes-ctr, because cipher block chaining was shown to be vulnerable last year.

I was able to get Speedtest.net and iperf3 (-P1, -P5 and -P10) TCP throughput of around 810-850Mbps (defconfig NAT) on RouterOS 6.37.1 and 6.38rc15.

I ported U-Boot and LEDE (née OpenWrt) to this router and ran Speedtest.net and iperf3 as above at different U-Boot clock speeds (NAT):
880MHz: 915Mbps
900MHz: 920Mbps
1200MHz: 935Mbps
With one core at 100% due to Ethernet interrupts (softirq).

Looks like some driver optimization is still possible on RouterOS. MikroTik - overclock to 1200MHz should also be possible ;)

I should also add that I'm seeing tx issues sending data from a new RB750Gr3 with 6.37.1 to a RB1100AHx2 running 6.35.2 (using l2tp/ipsec AES 256, CBC 192). This seems to be resolved when using a non hardware accelerated AES CTR). I'm hoping its more the RB1100AHx2 being on a old firmware, than the RB750Gr3.

its cool that it had enough RAM onboard, so while you less constrained with CPU - you may actually had some use for it, then.
but maybe im wrong but Mediatek had only drivers for 2.6 linux for it before and moving upstream(in say RouterOS 7 ?)may be problematic if thats not outdated info.
limited onboard flash aren't big problem, both because purpose and built-in SD and USB interfaces(unless they remove options for booting from that interfaces from loader), but resource-wise its not flawless idea, especially considering how fast flash prices falling.
Does anyone know what the mode button does ?
once customers - press that buttons - their problems with networking - mysteriously disappear with smoke and rainbow and their may happily dance under pop/disco/indian-music that integrate speaker start emit.
there was optional cookies, herbs and tea - optinally offered by microtik resellers to further improve their customers happines during such event. *picture of random network engineer doing "in dancing with all my 40 elephans wihile i sing to you about my love" excerssise from Bollywood movie*

*waves magic wand above 750Gr3 picture. hm, not works. *went to kitched for cookies, then*
Hope they update the PowerBOX with this chipset (and squeeze the RB3011 into small RB2011IL-IN case)

would be cool to see new Arm routers aswell. since SOHO CPE - start moving into 4x core territory and beyond that - its become necessity, actually.
A few words of warning about Micro-SD cards.

If you are going to store "The Dude" database on micro-sd you would be wise to use a MLC based Micro-SD card.
i think SLC would be even better in that respect. about ~30x times bigger resource than MLC flash had (about 100x more than TLC had)or so if you care about endurance and partially speed - bit more than density or cost.

Agreed, unfortunately they are really expensive.

The MLC based Sandisk Endurance and Lexar 633X cards are readily available, widely respected and reasonably priced. They are also known to handle large numbers of writes.

not true. they ARENT expensive.
they just smaller "for almost same prices".
eg bit more than 2-3x reduction, but fair-looking.
just stay away from scaming brands with overpriced SLC-labeled junk.
and no, Toshiba flash(both SanDisk -branded and their own) and their controllers - are terrible in my opinion. not only compared to say Hynix, Samsung or Micron, Intel, even to some 2rd and third echelon brands. can't say anything good or bad about Lexar. never heard about or used or know anyone who had(bud saw lot of annyong ads online about).
there was several consumer brands that sell and keep selling industrial and consumer flash cards and SSD with SLC flash for decade or so.
market-wise my preferece was irrelevant and choices are to rest consumers, generally so anyone whiching to buy some SLC storage - may and eventually would do some market research about, relevant to their location/market/region.
and no, i repeat, MLC and especially TLC flash - are disposable junk. no use for anything that storing short-living memories in say digital cameras "shortly before transfer to PC" or in disposable USB-flashdrives with random stuff.

p.s.
some brands avertise "SLC mode" for their MLC flash which do improve their speed considerably as well as buffer increase and controller improvements, but generally almost not improve their (ridiculously short)resource.

with recent progress in MLC reliability and endurance, is hard to justify SLC costs in most scenarios, MLC gives 2x the capacity of SLC with the same cells that means SLC cost double or gives half the capacity of MLC.

Of course SLC have its niche in very i/o intensive workloads, for example caching and heavy enterprise applications where performance and endurance justify the costs

The real problem of is with TLC (and incoming QLC ) endurance and write performance penalty is very big, because that some implementations of TLC have a portion of nand in SLC mode acting as a cache for the drive.

re: flash technologies, I don't think cell density (slc,mlc,tlc,...) matters as much for low capacity router flash, I think what matters more is the interface (whether the chip talk nor, or nand), and how you boot off of the chip, which filesystem you choose to put on top of the chip, and what you choose to mlock considering that interface to flash tends to be really slow.

Also, putting 1 or 2 GiB of flash onto a mips router begs the question: "What would it be used for?" Would there be any use for it other than with metarouter?

nope.
and as long "progress" in MLC manufacturing - most limits to 3D multi-layer density increase, transistors decreas.
charge retentions change - only affect power consumption(and slightly achievable density w/o affecting reliability).
controllers improvements - do contribute somewhat to both SLC, MLC and TLC flash memory endurance, but at marginal scale.
SLC was still 30x-40x superior to MLC and remain in future, constantly improved and used for exactly same reason.
real problem with MLC, TLC, QLC is ... their introduction and use. there shouldn't be such evil/crazy/weak things in market or production.
but i hope that MRAM and ReRAM was solve solid state stalemate that crippled us for long time. being faster than SRAM(down to 0.3ns),more radiation resilent than anything except FRAM on market, less-volatile than even flash are(decades of retention w/o need of refresh or re-cycle) and more power-efficient than anything else too.
PCM memory(like say "3D XPoint" -branded) sucks almost as flash are, only marginally better than flash and basically similar dead-end.

Have to say that after 2 weeks I'm still loving this little Beast. Have not had any issues with the device so far..

It seems to be stable and powerful enough to do wirespeed routing between users and servers in gigabit network and run IPSec-tunnels (aes-256-cbc) over 100Mbit Internet-connection.

Definitely worth of it's price!

Hi everyone, I'm new to MikroTik and was almost ready to order one of the new hEX RB750Gr3, but some of the recent discussion threads have cast a little doubt into my thinking. If I may I'd like to double check if the RB750Gr3 really will be suitable for my requirements which will include IPTV for a couple of users.

My internet connection (fibre to cabinet) is a maximum 70/20 Mbps for the foreseeable future, wired devices on the LAN will be connected via a Layer 3 switch (Linksys LGS528) and we have a good wireless access point. For now I think the performance priorities are security and minimising latency when concurrent devices are vying for internet bandwidth. It looks like the RB750Gr3 has more than enough processing power, but my uncertainty on whether to buy it are:

Noob friendliness?
  • Is the hEX configured easily to a basic, secure setup? I don't expect this to be like a Netgear or some ISP supplied router, but so as not to disrupt anyone else I'd like to have something up and running immediately, then learn about more advanced things as I find time. I really don't want to end up with some horribly bad lack of security/firewall due to my ignorance.
Is it possible to disable all of the ethernet port LEDs?
  • I see in the wiki there is an instruction page for disabling system LEDs, does this include all the port lights on the hEX?
Future updates of RouterOS v6 or upgrading v7?
  • I see multiple mentions of the 16Mb storage and how it may be limiting. Is it certain that there is no upgrade path to RouterOS v7 for the RB750Gr3? If there are no security implications for the long term it may not be a problem anyway. If we assume no upgrade to v7, will v6 continue to be updated for some years?

Also (and this is less important, but I'm curious) which features might be part of RouterOS v7 that would be a strong incentive to choose a different MikroTik?
No VLAN support?
  • Does this mean that if I create VLANs with the Linksys switch the RB750Gr3 will not be compatible? Or does it mean that VLANs created on my switch will be compatible and the RB750Gr3 can still do the NAT and firewall? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I really do have a lot to learn!
Dual core issue affecting IPTV?
  • I read on another thread that a dual core specific problem identified in RB850Gx2 negatively impacts IPTV. Specifically there are artefacts relating to the "reordering of packets." The RB750Gr3 CPU architecture is different, would the same bug manifest on the RB750Gr3?

If there is any chance IPTV will be disrupted I will be required to consider an alternative product.
Thank you.

-Upgrading should not be an issue
-VLAN's do work
-IPTV does work perfectly
-Configuring is not that hard

i know all this because i use the device on a 100/100mb fiber connection with VLAN's used for IPTV and Internet.

Thank you.

mediatek also had 4x core variation of this chip. they didn't comment bout how(when, how)it was available and how used, but it do exist.
~ same package, ~same price, just consume 0.6W~0.8W more for 2x more performance or something like that.

Understand whether RB750Gr3 inserted into the USB port wi-fi module?
And if I can through the USB wi-fi customers to distribute wi-fi network?

What EoIP performance (without IPSec) could we expect (roughly) with the RB750Gr3?
more than 1 Gbit/s?
more than 2 Gbit/s?
more than 3 Gbit/s?
more than 4 Gbit/s?
more than 5 Gbit/s?

Well, it has 5 ports with 1Gbit, so 5x 1x 2x = 10 Gbit/s total throughput for switching, but probably not for EoIP?

Great, thanks for the diagram! Currently it is meant for 100 Mbit/s traffic @1500byte frames. Just layer 2 over layer 3, no firewall. It is meant for getting layer 2 traffic from different old fashioned wifi controller with about 300 clients maximum a central gateway.

i think a scenario like that will be more appropriate for a ccr1009

i think improved version of hEX (gr3) is not to position the device as a product for bigger implementations, i think is for same size implementations, but to be able to endure the growth in bandwidth available form ISP's to clients

Looking at the HEX Gr3 brochure it would be half of that when you look at the performance table. 1Gb/s (986 Mbps) for the HEX G2 against the 1972 Mbps for the HEX Gr3.

Mikrotik RB750Gr3 can sustain 1Gbps throughput traffic + a bgp session with 70 LAN clients + 1 dhcp server
Thank you

Maybe if that BGP session does not import a full routing table and you don't use heavy firewall and qos rules.

"no firewall" meant "switch" usage scenario, NOT a "router". thats completely Different product for different purpose.
and nope, even 4x core version of such chip(mediatek had 1, 2x, 4x -core chips with 2x, 4x, 8x streams(SMT)respectively)barely can handle even 1Gbps in more serious than just "bare EOIP". usage.
newer 64Bit multicore(clustered by 4x generally, in most vendors. few SDN-tailored many-core chips are ~ exceptions. and yet rare on market, sadly) MIPS chips (low-cost, compared to previous ones) and newer A53 and A32/A35 -based low-power multi-core ARM networking SoC - may be more interesting option for. within 9~ month first devices on - ought to hit market(first two withn 4 months i hope).

This little box is really a great asset, despite some stuff is still not completely functional. However we can work around it and hope that the last bits will be tackled in time.

Mikrotik was really focused on the development of RouterOS lately and a LOT was done in many areas for which many thanks.

I was frustrated when my IPsec+LP2T went the blink on moving to the RB750Gr3 and I have now IKE2 and I am totally happy again.

When you are not afraid to not only invest in hardware but also in learning how to work with RouterOS you will have a great time and never have the feeling that you now it all. So much to learn and discover new way to make your life in working with networks and the internet.

I've got two of these things, one on a 75x75 fiber connection and one on a 100x10 cable connection. I've set up an IPSEC tunnel between the two using IKEv2, AES-128, SHA-1, and modp1024 for both phase 1 and 2. The strange thing is, no matter which direction I iperf to, I can't get more than 15 mbps. The hardware I have on both ends to iperf from is fully capable of saturating a 100mpbs link and I would think in theory I should at least be able to get 75mbps going from the fiber to the cable side. Any ideas where I might be going wrong?

There is a bit in the Wiki about this and you have to avoid packet fragmentation and the packet reordering is resolved in 6.39RC if I remember well.

Thanks! I was unaware of the 6.39 changes. I've now upgraded both sides; I was already reducing the MTU. I have noticed that when only 1 packet per iperf test is affected by my MTU rules though; not sure if that should be the case. Unfortunately upgrading to 6.39 did not produce any changes. I've also tried reducing my firewall rules to the Mikrotik defaults (leaving the IPSEC and MTU rules in place) and disabling Fasttrack but still no change.

I deployed a RB750Gr3 at a client with basic office NAT / DHCP / DNS and a queue tree for a 300mbps cable connection. After ~12 hours, the device stopped responding to ping. After a few minutes, pings came back but all usermode services appeared dead - no DNS, no winbox, nothing. Had to have the client reboot due to no DNS causing their internet to be effectively dead. After the reboot I had a window to upgrade the ROS and firmware (factory version was a couple of versions behind). Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before with this board? I made a big deal of how reliable a Mikrotik router would be over the current consumer stuff they were using and this is not a very good first impression :(.

Nothing was accessible from WAN.

Update: I seem to have been able to reproduce it by resetting the modem. The DHCP client got stuck in "rebinding", the IP on the routerboard remained active to pings and established connections, but new connections disappeared into the void (no hits on the firewall DROP rule). Maybe the shitty modem was blocking all WAN connections until it saw the IP was bound? Luckily I had an active SSH session that didn't timeout during the reboot, which is how I was able to diagnose this.

If you are going to store "The Dude" database on micro-sd...
... Cheap Junk Micro-SD cards you will likely wear it out very quickly
Further to this advice, can anyone advise what would be the minimum capacity microSD card to consider for a small home/office network?

I was looking at the high endurance cards and the 64GB should last just over 16 months if recording 24/7 at the rated spec, but maybe that's overkill for this? So I guess the question is really how much data can The Dude write?

16GB: 3,000 hours
32GB: 6,000 hours
64GB: 12,000 hours

Based on Full HD (1920x1080P) video content recorded at 26 Mbps at 30°C on Transcend DrivePro series. Performance may vary due to host hardware, software and usage.

actually its measured in cycles of write for each cell.
transcend-wise they had both SLC ("industrial"-labaeled)products and bit more cheap "SuperMLC" which quite meh compared to SLC, yet bit better than MLC and TLC, but mostly in speed, resource increase quite marginal.
SLC tend to sustain 40x(or even 100x, depend sub-type or implementations, compared)bigger resource than MLC had, generally

endurance... ....trascend specs
If it was just a claim for hours use I wouldn't trust it and question under what conditions, but the last line of the previous post: "26 Mbps at 30°C" is the condition stated by Transcend. I would say that constant 30°C is very optimistic for dashcam users but you wouldn’t expect to be driving 24/7 either.

maybe for training or practicing is a missing feature, but for production environments is not, remember this device has level 4 license because that will be limited to only 20 concurrent usermanager sessions

if you have a remote usermanager you can use the rb750gr3 to do hotspot with 200 concurrent users, more than enough for this size of device

It's because you have the wireless package installed/enabled.

Remove/Disable it, reboot and will go away.

Because you might want to use CAPsMAN on the device? So it is actually not that funny.

You must to have other AP to use Capsman.

Yes. And then you can use the RB750Gr3 to manage it. And for that you need the wireless package. When you don't want it,
you can disable it. Just like MPLS (are you using that?), hotspot (only useful when you have an AP), and in many cases routing as well.
One nice property of RouterOS is that almost the same software is running on all the models, and you can customize it.
When you want to keep iterating that this is funny or strange, maybe it is not the ideal system for you.

Why Wireless tab is showing into this device, when this device dont have wireless at all ? Pls remove it from menu, its useless.

RoS 6.40.5
it is perfect router to serve as CAPsMAN for a small home network (my case) or small office. As I use APs with reduced TX power to limit self-interference.

Or rather uninstall it.

Unfortunately devices are shipped with the "bundle package" by default so this normally cannot be done unless you have done a custom netinstall - in which case you of course would have omitted that package.

No need to custom netinstall. Just put there selected packages of higher version and reboot.

Nice to know...so far I have NetInstalled all my routers to get rid of unneeded packages.
