load balancing with single gateway

Thu Oct 12, 2006 11:50 am

Hi,
I'd got multiple pppoe accounts from the same service provider. So i get the same gateway. How to do load balancing in this kind of scenario

clients <>eth0.....................eth1<>pppoe1
pppoe2
pppoe3
all pppoe get the same gateway

scenario 2
the only difference is tht i get one ip on the client.
client one Ip only <>eth0.....................eth1<>pppoe1
pppoe2
pppoe3
thnx

this was discussed before. you would need some `per interface` routing, but this is not supported.

Which makes me ask again if this could be introduced in 3.0 (for point-to-point interfaces only, as it makes not much sense on other interface types)?

Best regards,

you could add two routers - one for each pppoe connection. the current one will loadbalance to the two :)
            __________ ISP 1
        R2 /
R1-------
        R3 \__________ ISP 2

Aarg - two more possible points of failure (not to talk about expenses).

Having several (separate) uplinks to the same provider (with the same gateway) mostly is a sign of using several ADSL or the like as a cheap "uplink". So cost WILL be a matter here.

And - come on - this one is really easy to implement, no? PLEASE!

ok routers installed. as per picture above in normis' post. does these router i:e r1 and r2 needs to be connected on different ethernet interface or multiples ips can be added on the same ethernet and do the load balancing.

You can use the same interface if you choose. Preferred source might come into play. As long as you have unique gateway IPs is what matters.
