Configuring Bridges and Winbox problem

Fri Oct 27, 2006 4:20 pm

Can someone help me with this problem please. Whenever I try and configure bridge ports adding either an ethernet port or a wireless port I invariably lose contact with a MT 535. This is happening on multiple boxes with different version of 2.9 including the latest.

The process goes as follows: I assign an IP address to the ethernet port and log in via winbox. I create bridge1 and then go into ports and add ether1. Typically at this stage winbox crashes and I can no longer ping the box. I then try various power off and power on cycles and sometimes the box starts communicating again. Sometimes I have to delete the bridge through the console port. The process to recover the box seems to be random, usually after some effort it starts working again and is then fine. It will also often happen when adding a wlan to the bridge.

Thanks

Use mac via WinBox or console to work on the box while working on the connected interface. When you shift the IP over to the bridge, it will begin working again.

Thank you for your reply. Do you know if there are any rules about which interfaces you should apply the IP address to when bridging. From your reply I am assuming that in fact the bridge should have the IP address and not ether1. Is that correct. Thanks Nigel

Yes, the IP should move to the bridge. Once that is done (and the bridge ports are set) you can reconnect via IP. MAC will work for small stuff, but will drop connection if you drag and drop files over 40k or so.
