N vs AC

Sun Apr 09, 2017 3:04 am

Hi all,

Quick question for the more experienced.

We're in the process of modernising our network and that means AC devices.

I've been fine tuning a few links, and usually just by switching to 'only-N/ A/N' I get more throughput or more stability.

Best example is a >10km link with Dynadishes, with AC 40mhz I get a bouncy 140Mbps and just switching to N throughput jumps to a stable 160Mbps. No frequency change.

Is this something you have seen as well? Do you think I'm nuts? Elaborate below.

To really be more spectral efficient, 802.11ac gear has to work in a lower-noise-level environment compared to 802.11n.
You can either try to find a cleaner channel or invest in higher gain antennas to achieve higher SNR.

Interesting, I'll give it a read. We aren't really in high noise environment since it's pretty rural. Most of the links are already on 30dbm dishes.
