1500 MTU Over PPPoE with EoIP tunnel

Thu Jul 13, 2017 12:36 pm

Hi,

I am looking to get a 1500 MTU over a DSL connection with only gives me 1480. I am wanting to put a EoIP tunnel over this connection. I can see there are settings in the EoIP tunnel configuration but i am unable to get anything to work. A colleague of mine has looked in to mangle rules but again he has not be able to get this to work.

If anyone can provide a solution that would be great. If you need any more information that would be good to. I am using 2 RB3011 one is on a DSL connection with a max MTU of 1480 and the other is connected to a L3 switch with MTU of 1500

Many thanks,

Matt G

As far as I know you can't put 1500 unless the PPPoE Server allows you to specify >1500, 1480 is used because the rest 20bytes are reserved.

MTU doesn't work that way. Having bridge ports that have a different MTU shouldn't be harmful to traffic. Just make sure hosts respect ICMP too big messages for IPv6 or DF bit traffic. For other IPv4 traffic the router will fragment it.
