XBox 360 Live NAT issuses

Wed Dec 27, 2006 4:20 pm

I work for a WISP and one of our clients just got himself a Xbox 360 which he is wanting to use to play online with. He connection is as such XBOX - DLink DES1008D - RB112 (2.9.28).

Now after running all the tests on the Xbox everything comes up as good (he can also see his PC which is connected to the dlink switch), except for the NAT test which is Moderate. Now i don't think it's the Dlink, coz thats just a generic switch not a router, so I'm guessing it;s something with our RB112.

How can I help this guy to get his Xbox up and running?

PS: the only thing i can see in the NAT table is a masquerade rule on the PPPOE client interface.

You have to get more information about NAT test, that is perfromed by Xbox or any other device.
Probably, Xbox is asking for specific port translation, in other words you can add static NAT rules to translate specific port numbers directly to device.

Lemmi guess:
xbox 360 uses UPnP to open ports
D-Link accepts UPnP and opens the ports
But the WAN side of the D-Link is a private ip address NATed by the RB112

So the only way to make this work is to give the D-Link a public ip address or remove the Dlink altogether (enable upnp on rb112 in such event)

a nat setting of moderate will not stop him from playing online.

not even a nat setting of strict will keep him from playing on line.

If you foward the 3 or 4 xbox live ports to his Xbox the nat in the xbox live test will show OPEN.

From my testing OPEN vs Moderate vs Strict ONLY matters in a few sistuations in which YOUR xbox is Hosting a game. again this really does not affect online play, if he can sign into xbox live he should be able to join all games with no issues.

EDIT; oh and i find that using Upnp on the xbox for live purposes causes more problems than anthing else...just disable Upnp on the router side and either foward the correct 3 or 4 xbox live ports..if you really want the nat to say OPEN

Shot for all the help guys.

Ok well let me try setup those 3 port forwards that the XBox requires.
Can anyone let me know how the XBox gets it's IP? Is it DCHP or is it a static ip? And also how can i found out what the IP of the xbox is so i can actually forward the ports to it?

its dhcp...you can either look on the router for which dhcp clients refresh whne the 360 boots up..

or you can go to the network settings-> edit settings from the xbox 360 dash and you will see the ip address the xbox has grabbed, or from there you can set it to not use dchp and use a Static IP.
