Changing Static IP to Dynamic IP?

Tue Jan 16, 2018 9:42 am

About three months ago I got a home PC, VDSL service and a MikroTik router (RB750gr3). The VDSL guys got the modem (SMART/RC model:SR501) going, but the router was too much for them, so I had a computer tech do a housecall to configure it. Recently I decided to switch the router from Static IP to Dynamic IP, so tomorrow I must bring in the modem to the VDSL provider to change it. Once modem has been changed to Dynamic IP, I assume the router must be altered too. Before I pay $100 for the computer tech to do another housecall, I would like to at least try to switch the router into using the Dynamic IP on my own. Any advice or tips to do this would be appreciated. FYI, I have its user name, password, and what looks to be a numerical IP address written down. Thanks.

Firstly you need to know how ISP will provide you with ip address. Is it PPPoE, DHCP, L2TP.... After that we will help you without any problem.

Yeap.

Probably you're going to be "bridging" the DSL "router" (which is a modem and router combination probably) so that you will set up the MikroTik as the router and likely pppoe-client. It's probably not a big deal.

The only issue I came across when I did this was MikroTik didn't set the pppoe-client interface mtu/mru correctly (1492 is usually what it is). For some reason it set it to 512 bytes.
