Configuring VLAN between Cisco 1900 and RouterBoard 500

Sat Jan 13, 2007 5:36 pm

Hi All

I'm totally new to Vlan's and would like to set up the following.

Mikrotik to Cisco, with 2 vlan's on cisco.

Vlan 1 to be 192.168.1.x
Vlan 2 to be 192.168.2.x

I've got a wan port on the MT, and want traffic to go from the wan to the 2 vlans.

Can anybody help me configure the MT and the Cisco please before I loose all my hair!

Cheers

Glen

Cisco Catalyst 1900? Really? That's ancient! Where did you get that one from? Anyway, the Catalyst 1900 does not support 802.1q VLAN tagging/trunking, it only supports the older, Cisco proprietary ISL protocol, which is not compatible with other vendors, including MikroTik RouterOS. You will probably not be able to create a working VLAN trunk between the Cat 1900 and your router.

cat 1900s are great! old...but i use them as appartment installs...as if people need more than 10 mbit anyway..my line is usally only around 10-12 max so for 24 10mbit ports that can be monitored by snmp and remotely configured..30-60$ is not bad!

Depends on the model and the installed IOS version. Any version that supports dot1q will do, versions that only support ISL will not work.

All currently not EOL'd Catalyst 2900 versions (such as 2950, 2960) do support dot1q, but I have seen some older 2916 a few years ago that
did not, so if you plan to buy an older model on the second-hand market you'd have to check with the seller in advance.

A good trick is to set up your 1900's all over the place and consolidate them into a 2900 and then use vlan mapping to map the ISL trunks to 802.1q ones.
