Remote access to hAP ac lite

Thu Jul 05, 2018 9:24 pm

Hi,

I'm really a rookie in the Mikrotik area but find the product really exciting. I've bought a hAP ac lite and it is configured to work with my 4G USB stick for guest WiFi. It works great and the coverage is really good!

I would like to access the router when I'm travelling and I have tried to enable DDNS under IP/Cloud. I have also opened port 8291 TCP.

What else do I need to configure to be able to access my router remotely with Winbox? Should I just enter the xxxxxxxxx.sn.mynetname.net string in the Connect to field in Winbox? I get an error message "ERROR: could not connect to xxxxxxxxx.sn.mynetname.net" when I try.

Hi,

to check if you port is open, you should scan for open ports in your router with some online port scanner (if you have not configured your firewall to block scans), for example t1shopper port scanner is good one.

Firstly, make sure that you have public IP. Look into your device on ip->addresses and check if any of them is same as address which you see when you look at https://www.whatismyip.com
If it is different, it means you are behind another NAT, probably from your ISP (internet provider) and you can't connect remotely because your ISP will block such attempt. (very simply said)
If it is same, it means your device has public IP and it is possible to connect from internet (but it has to be set up correctly)

Secondly, it is not recommended to open any unnecessary port to public interface. Especially the winbox one, which was recently targeted by attackers due to few vulnerabilities.
If you really want to access your device or network remotely, it would be better to set up VPN server on your mikrotik and connect through this VPN.
