SR2 and SR9 don't work together well.

Mon Feb 05, 2007 11:41 pm

Had been posting about having a RB153 with a SR2 and SR9 in it.
Over the weekend one of my climbers braved the cold for me and
changed out the radio. We ran LMR down so I could work on it from the
ground. 75' in the air. I hooked up a 532 with an SR2 only and i was
seeing average customer levels around -55. I put my RB153 back on
and instantly average drops to around -75 to -80db. Pull the SR9 card
out of the 153 and customers are also around -55. Final test was to put
the SR9 in with the SR2 on the 532 and almost same. customer between
-75 and -80. I tried 2 different SR2s and 2 different SR9s in both the
RB532 and RB153 with same results. Not sure if I am just unlucky, but
thought I would just relay what I was seeing in case others are having
problems with SR2 and SR9 in one box together.
We stuck a trango 900 up instead of going with the SR9 in this particular location.

We've got several installations w/the same combination of cards, two of 'em on RB153 and we don't see this. I wonder if it depends on the combination of channels in use?

I had the same issue. RB532 with SR9 and SR2. SR2 wouldn't work worth anything until I pulled the SR9. I had the SR9 completely disabled.

Sounds like something that should be called to UBNT's attention. Oscillation in SR9, maybe?

I have been told during a Mikrotik training class that the SR9 card is an SR2 card with a frequency changer on it. You can test this by hooking up a routerboard with an SR9 card in it and put a laptop with a good wireless card close to it and search for networks and you should pick up a weak signal from the SR9 card. So most likely what you have is that since the cards are so close together that the signal from the SR9 card before it is getting changed is being picked up by the SR2 and is therefore causing noise directly at the cards. The firs thing that I would try is setting your cards at opposite ends of the channels to see if that helps at all. You may just need to see if you can set these networks up on separate boards in separate enclosures.

LOL, that was the first thing I saw when I got my first SR9. I popped the bad boy into a rb532 board with a SR2, set the SR2 in AP and the SR9 in station and did a scan. Guess what? it saw the SR2. I then put the SR9 in another rb532 and moved it about 6 feet away and it still saw the SR2.

I haven't setup any towers with the sr2/sr9 combo but I do have sr5/sr9 APs that work fine so far. But I seem to get better connections with sr2s set to 5mhz channels.

jober, that would make since as what im hearing is the SR9 is a 2.4 gig (sr2) card with a converter to 900mhz..thus the issue only affects 2.4, not SR5s.

anyone else have input on serving clients on 2.4 and using a sr9 in the same board (133)

JOBER:
way off topic, but i see that you are in louisiana, do you have any towers or coverage on the west bank (new orleans)? i have some sites i serve and i would rather not use cox anymore. u can email me at jo2jo@cox.net
