Whats the difference between long term and stable?

Fri Oct 12, 2018 1:14 pm

Just wanting to download the most stable and bugfree version of routerOS. Which should I choose? Normally Id choose 'stable' but long term is older, so suggests more stable??

In Linux Long term made sense, as you got upgrades for that version, but not sure what this one means because you can upgrade any routerOS as far as im aware?

Thanks.

yes, long-term means it is tested for a longer time, thus, more stable.

release channels renamed - "bugfix" to "long-term", "current" to "stable" and "release candidate" to "testing";
"testing" release channel now can contain "beta" together with "release-candidate" versions;

Would it not be a wonderful world if we had a bugfree version but we have to do with a bugfixed version that carriers the name long-term.

Hey Normis.

I know the thread is from 2018, and I didn't mean to be a gravedigger...
Maaass...

From my experiences, for scenarios where I believe the use of MikroTik still fits, I have had better success using version 7 than version 6 RouterOS. I speak especially of use as BNG/B-RAS and as CGNAT.

But some customers are still very reluctant to adopt v7.
Most of them argue that in official Mikrotik training materials, supposedly there is or there was an orientation that only "long-term" should be used in production.
I even see this post from 2018, and its response, being used today to support arguments for not using v7 now in 2023.
Sometimes some consulting clients even "forbid" to upgrade to v7 because someone did it in the past and they created chaos because they did it in eXtreme Go Horse mode.

I don't want to say here that the placements and information of past times are wrong, I'm just saying that now in 2023 the references are different, the statements from 2018 may no longer fit today.

Would it be possible for MikroTik to make a statement about the use of Stable in v7 versus the use of v6 long-term?
And specifically update official training materials and ask official trainers to update their materials...
