FastTrack + Simple Queue (Max Limit for Target Upload/Download

Thu May 23, 2019 2:58 am

Hi there,

I have some Simple Queues setup that limit upload / download on certain IPs. This only works if FastTrack is disabled. (I remember reading about it as to why it so but can't find the page anymore).
Now, I have 1GB internet and noticed that Ethernet connection from provider's router gives 900+Mb but after MilroTik router it drops to 300+Mb. If I enable FastTrack it goes up to 900+Mb.

Questions is can I have 900+ speed (assuming enabling FastTrack is a must) and limit upload / download speeds for certain IPs (maybe in some other way than Simple Queues) at the same time?

Please advice.

You could try making a specific rule firewall rule for this traffic and putting that above the fasttrack rule, maybe also add a specific "established, related" rule for this traffic.

After that you can use marks/queues/limits for this traffic and use fasttrack for the other traffic.

Well... what @argusb suggests would mean that fasttracked packets would get absolute priority as they would not be queued at all. So if the intention is to throttle some traffic by queueing and bandwidth-shaping it and leaving most of the traffic get as much of the remaining bandwidth as it wants, it could make some sense. If you want to give priority to a relatively small volume of traffic, then the rest must be queued and if such rest takes more than 300 Mbit/s, you're back where you began. So in the latter case, you need a more powerful hardware. A RB4011 or RB1100 should be fine for this purpose; hAP ac² might be as well but definitely not if you need to run PPPoE on it - see the test results with PPPoE.

Hi, thank you both for the suggestions. I use Mikrotik RB3011UIAS-RM which I though is powerful enough. I consider myself an advance user of MilkroTik as I was able to configure it, harden, and even write some scripts. But when it comes to filtering packets I'm always at a loss. I know I will eventually figure it out by watching tons of you-tube videos, but for now it is very tempting to get a second MikroTik router that will have all the simple queue configuration and use it for IPs that needs to be throttled and leave the main router on fasttrack and connect to it things that don't need to be throttled. Of course I would rather have one router to do that. And will try to figure out that first...

I don't understand how watching tons of videos can be more beneficial than reading two Wiki pages of manual and spending the time you'd otherwise spend watching the videos by hands-on testing of the behaviour. But maybe reading this and this can make further reading of the Wiki easier, as the Wiki often gives you all the fine details but not the initial global overview?
