Best Practise / multi SSID multi AP Network

Mon Sep 02, 2019 1:17 pm

Hi everyone.
I am using mt hardware around 3 years now. i did several installations in soho's. now i got a bigger customer with special needs.

facts about the customer:
- around 100 clients (Smartphones, Tablets, Chromebooks, Win-PC's)
- 12 rooms on 3 floors
- around 30/5MBit internet connection

we installed 4 cAP-2nD first and replaced two with the cAP-AC (RBcAPGi-5acD2nD). all managed with the hEX (RB750Gr3) with cAPsman. All AccessPoints are wired with a 5-Port Mikrotik PoE-Switch.

facts about the hardware:
- 3 SSID
- 3 Subnets
- 3 DHCP configured
- 3 Bridges
- all 4 AP's radio the 3 SSID's

The main problem:
- rush hour makes it impossible to get a stable connection
- seamless roaming doesn't work, so clients dont change the AP's

I know these are very few and non-detailed informations, but is there any best-practice use-case for a setup like this? i read several presenations, blog-entries and stuff. at least, there are many possible ways. sadly there are major changes in RoS so the manuals aren't very helpful from time to time.

i would be great if someone with a similar setup would get in touch with me to check the configs and stuff!

thanks for your time

I have a similar scenario, but with less count of wireless clients (around 30), but the rest is almost the same, about 100 clients/devices in a whole network.
3 SSID, 2 DHCPs, 2 bridges, 3 RBcAPGi-5acD2nD and all is managed by 951G-2HnD with Capsman.
All seems working to me, but I noticed that when someone moved to another room, he/she stayed connected to a previous ap even if in that room is ap with much stronger signal. Which is weird.
It takes a time before it switch to the strongest ap. I read something about lowering signal on aps to avoid that trouble, but I am not sure about it.
But no one complained about troubles with roaming or network issues.

Do You have a different channel on each ap ?

Different channels.
On 2,4Ghz - reduce TX power. a lot. That helps to get clients to use 5GHz, which works a lot better in crowded environment.
Do a proper coverage test. I would think you need more 5GHz AP than three to cover a 3 story building with 12 rooms, but that ofcourse depends on size and building material.
Concrete walls and floors means one AP per room.

The main trouble is 2.4Ghz covers whole building, 5Ghz is not strong enough, practicaly if UR not in room with 5Ghz AP, than the signal is almost useless.
So I covered whole building with 2.4 and can not reduce power.
Only a few clients using 5GHz cos its coverage is poor. Perhaps the walls are mixed with metal or something and signal is weak.

Thanks for your replies.

one AP covers 3-4 rooms. its mounted on top of the floor wall which is in the middle. i tried the TX-18 setting, the reject/accept -80--120 options... all in all it wasn't the solution i was hoping it was. the 5Ghz-Only idea cant be set up, there are devices with old wifi standards and no 5Ghz support. tried that at first.

thanks anyway. glad that i'm not the only one with those problems :)
