Using hotspot feature for general ISP authentication

Is anybody using the hotspot feature to do community-wide authentication on a large wireless network? I'm just wondering whether it is suitable for this. Can it handle a lot (hundreds) of clients or will it consume too many resources vs. using something like PPPoE? Thanks!

We are using the hotspot for this purpose too and we have about 80 clients connected and it works very fine, and the mikrotik is not the AP, only working in bridge mode with 5 ethernet, and have clients hotspot wireless and wired...
