60G 500M link

Wed Nov 20, 2019 8:45 pm

Installing our first 60G link. 500M link with a wAP AP on one end and LHG60 on the other. I'm wondering what we should expect for RSSI. I tried the Mikrotik wireless link calculator but don't see where it shows any signal levels. It just says the link status is reliable. We are getting -62 at the wAP and -68 on the LHG. Seems like it should be better than that. We are getting MCS 7 & 8, but it does go down in the rain.

WAP60 and LHG60 Have different radiation patterns and they do no work in the same way.
So yes, use the same model on both sides.

I can see using same on both side for P2P, but if you're doing multipoint and need to go more than 200M you would want the larger gain on the client end. Maybe shouldn't use Mikrotik for any multipoint? That's part of what we're trying to learn.

This link is just a backup and we wanted to test multipoint operation over time. It turns out is was more reliable than I thought. One of the outages was our guys moving the radio and the other was a major storm with over 1 inch of rain per hour. Prior to that it hadn't gone down at all in 3 months, although we haven't had really heavy rains. That being said, I agree it seems 500 meters is a little too far for multipoint with Mikrotik at the moment.

500m is nothing and MikroTik gives great solutions as long as you know what you do...
It is part of the network engineer to choose the correct equipment for its PTMP or PTP link.

I agree, and often the best way to know what to do as an engineer is test for yourself.

I guess I don't understand your statement that you should use the same on both ends because they have different radiation patterns. What do you mean by that? I know they have very different antenna patterns. I can understand that you need more link budget for that distance so use higher gain device on both ends.

You can see the physical properties of each antenna in the following link :
