CRS318 netPower - any news?

Fri Jan 03, 2020 12:52 pm

March 2019 - first announced (page 36 and later):
https://mum.mikrotik.com/presentations/ ... 033971.pdf
December 2019 - still announced (page 20):
https://mum.mikrotik.com/presentations/ ... 386306.pdf
When can we expect real availability? The distributor I asked still doesn't know.
What is so difficult about these devices that they are still vapourware after 10 months?
There are lots of passive PoE injectors already available - and you introduce another one (GPEN11).
There are also Ethernet surge suppressors like ETH-SP - and you introduce another one (GESP).
There are very few reverse PoE switches - much needed - and you still don't have them. What is the logic behind it?
This year we are in a race with EU-subsidized fiber, mostly by big telcos (who really could do without our taxpayer money), and without complete cost-effective GPEN solution (of which reverse-PoE switches are the central part) we will lose.
If the devices won't be available anytime soon - fine, but please clearly say so. I will have to roll my own (basically put CRS112-8P-4S in outdoor box, and solder a few diodes on the PoE board). But I prefer to avoid this if I can get a nice ready product soon.
Yes, there are reverse-PoE switches (or just boards) available in China and India, but most of them are either unmanaged or specified for 0-40C temperature range so no good for roofs.
Here we have lots of "many single-family houses glued together horizontally in a row, with no common part to take power from" (in Polish just one word - "szeregowka") for which reverse-PoE would be just perfect (as upgrade for currently existing many separate radio installations).
It's the same pattern as the lack of Delegated-IPv6-Prefix for PPPoE server, that stops IPv6 deployments. Long requested, still not implemented and no clear date when it will be. So I have to decide, stay with MT or roll my own on some x86 box, like Debian+BIRD+accel-ppp or possibly VyOS.

+1
No body does Reverse PoE products. It is very much needed but MT is focusing on other stuff instead of this.

I'm also very interested in the netpower stuff, all of the announced switches sound like they'll have a place in our network. From googling around, it seems like there's some distributors beginning to list them (Definitely not as in stock, but they're listed) but it's hard to gauge a timeline from that.

Some distributors had them listed many months ago (not in stock, no prices), so this means nothing.
The latest response from support was "end of Q1". Still nothing in the January 2020 newsletter.

Already available to order in Mikrotik, but with one PSU which is ok for its price tag. Still, can't wait to get my hands on it.

It would be a nice product........... in the 2000's
Number of 100 Mbps Ethernet ports - 16

Hello guys, 2020 is still here. We need to provide more than 100 Mbps service.

100M is fine for us since we'd primarily be using it to split off a regular PTMP CPE where we don't currently have plans to do higher than 100M packages... That said, I wish the PoE out was gigabit.

I think this concept will become quite compelling when they release a 10GPeR.

The gigabit versions were already announced, but not with reverse PoE.

Many people still have very slow 25/3 or less.

At least you can lay gigabit lines where construction is cheaper.

I have a question about this unit (The netPower 15FR, specifically).
https://mikrotik.com/product/crs318_1fi_15fr_2s_out

It is listed as having 16x 10/100 Ethernet ports, but it also says "non-blocking throughput of 3.6 Gbps, switching capacity of 7.2 Gbps and forwarding rate of 5.4 Mpps".

Is one of these a typo?

[I do see plenty of situations where I would sell <100 Mbps services, so I still see uses for 100 Mbps ports, but I'm not sure I understand

And you didn't read preceeding paragraph, which starts with "There are two SFP ports for fiber connectivity." ... these add 2Gbps to total throughput and 4Gbps to switching capacity.

I did read the "preceeding" paragraph... but it appears I somehow made a mistake when considering the total.

I apologize for my mistake. Thank you for pointing it out in a thoughtful manner.
