Looking at the output from 'export', I see lines like ...=defconf, or lines where "defconf" is used in a comment.

What does 'defconf' mean? Is it some sort of comment or is it functional?

I believe it means default configuration.

As @mblfone wrote, it means "DEFault CONFiguration" and is only a comment (no function). It serves administrator as reminder that the config item is inherited from factory default configuration. Administrator then makes self a favour by not adding the same comment to his own config items (and changing that comment if he changes the default config item in any way).

Actually it is also has a function: when you select "remove default configuration" it will remove those defconf items and keep the ones you have added yourself.
But indeed, it can be used as a reminder and when you do not plan to remove the default configuration (which is something you would only do shortly after installing the device anyway) you can just change those comments to something you like better.
