SwOS on CRS354-48G-4S+2Q+ missing ?

Hi,
I have a new CRS354-48G-4S+2Q+ switch, and I would test SwOS.
So in Winbox I go to system, Routerboard, settings and choose SwOS in Boot OS.
I reboot the switch.

Nothing happens... The switch seems dead.
In console mode, I have this error :
RouterBOOT booter 6.45.7

CRS354-48G-4S+2Q+

CPU frequency: 650 MHz
 Memory speed: 300 MHz
  Memory size: 64 MiB
 Storage size: 16 MiB

Press any key within 2 seconds to enter setup..
Please, check ethernet cable...
Ethernet link absent...
trying bootp protocol................................. failed
kernel loading failed
So what i'm doing wrong ?
I return back to routerOS and use Winbox.
https://files.silibre.fr/index.php/s/r8WsDpWDBFJocBW

is it normal ?

So it's normal : https://mikrotik.com/product/crs354_48g_4splus2qplusrm
Only RouterOS.
Strange strategy, because all others CRS3XX products have SwOS.

So the new question is : when SwOS be available for this product ?

I had 2 pre-ordered, and when I ordered them the website most certainly said they supported SwOS. I had them shipped directly to the datacenter, and boy was I surprised at what I found when I flew out there to install them. No SwOS at all (although interestingly the quick guide in the box still stated it did). I immediately reached out to my suppliers and they said, "no, it does not have SwOS". I went back to the website and sure enough, all was changed. I sent them a picture of the guide in the box and they played it off as a printing mistake... I have also since found a google cached version of the QS guide from the MT site that did have the dual boot language in it.

My guess is that the production delays were related to SwOS so they canned it at the last minute to get the units out the door. I had to return them as I am not interested in running ROS on switches (love ROS, just not for switches). What a waste of time and money. I am very disappointed by MT for this last minute switcharoo and what seems like a cover up on the backend. Guess it really was too good to be true.

I should also mention, that the two I had, on ROS, spiked CPU temps to 65c and the fans to full blast within 3 minutes of boot with zero load and only one port connected for configuration on the bench (ambient temperature @ 68f). Not sure if that is too hot or if it would been fine under load, but it seemed concerning.

Here is the Google cached version if the quickstart guide: https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/ ... ent=safari

Any Mikrotik team user can confirm that SwOS will be available for this model ?

The SwOS currently is not available for CRS354 devices, it may become available in future by software updates.
We have corrected all documentation regarding it and plan to hide non-working boot options to avoid confusion.
As a workaround, you can still utilize every available switch feature using RouterOS.

Thanks.

So for VLAN configuration and LACP, do you have a link to a documentation with examples on switch ?

VLANs are configured using a bridge with HW-offloaded vlan-filtering:

LACP is configured using bonding:

This is a real shame.

Maybe I'm a bit slow, but a job that I'd expect would take 15-30 minutes, unpacking a switch, hooking up som cables, setting up some bonds, tagging and untagging a few vlans. You know, switching, layer 2 stuff.

Has so far taken the better part of two days. Grasping RouterOS, while trying to hack together a, in networking terms, quite straight forward and simple configuration. I think I'm getting there, but this was a very unpleasant surprise for my first Mikrotik experience.

From what I've been able to grasp, routeros looks like a fantastically versatile and powerful tool. But I just need to tag a few vlans here, untag a few there, and bond a few, and that's about that. Switching stuff.

The switch itself looks like a pretty decent unit. Very good value for money. But if you're expecting a traditional switch setup experience, you're in for something else. This can be everything you want, and at least me, I'm going to have to learn a bit about it to feel comfortable deploying this thing. So considering the large investment in grasping routeros, perhaps it's not such good value after all. Especially if you're not deploying a large amount of these units.

I'm not in this product for routing things. Not even between vlans. I just want a easy setup switch.

By the way, the booklet that came with my unit, in addition to explaining how to boot swOS (which, if followed, puts the switch in a boot loop), also states it has a USB Type A connector. I've not been able to find one. You know what would be really nice? One of those micro-usb ports that contains a usb-to-serial interface for a management port. Those are very handy.

TL; DR;

RouterOS is probably great. But for simple switching stuff, it's ridiculously overkill.

Hi, you need serial console access ... and change the boot order.

Most of the vendor sites still state that this switch supports dual boot RouterOS and SwitchOS.

The boot option is in the console at startup to select Router OS or Switch OS.

This really needs Switch OS to make it work as it was made to work. Router OS with the CPU power at hand in this device can't even begin to handle the load required.

Router OS is great in a powerful router, but Switch OS is better for a switch.

Please get Switch OS updated to run on this hardware.

hi, have you got any updates on this? I recently bought this switch due to its incredible price and I had some appliances running with swos in past.

I would like to run it as a simple switch in front of a router but somehow the network is not stable, I'm dealing with nat problems and tremendous connection issues.

What can I do? Im using a regular router I would like to extend.

Same problem here. We bought two switches of that type, both have massive packet loss. It seems that only ingress traffic is being dropped. Sometimes this condition lasts a couple of seconds causing 100000+ packets being lost. We installed the latest v6.47.2 (stable) but it does not seem to make any difference in a simple switched environment. We also found out that it might make a difference which ports are being used. On both switches the first 8 ports were worse than the other ones.

Running out of ideas ... now buying something else from a competitor.

Another bad news : with Zabbix via SNMP, the CPU is always at 100%.
Maybe that explain why we have lost packets ?

Plain and simple.
THIS SUCKS.
I unknowingly borked a brand new switch out of the box. That has to be one of the very few times I've been dissapointed with TIK.
I was able to console in, net-boot, and recover, but lack of SWos is gonna be a deal breaker. With this number of ports I don't think ROS is gonna be manageable.
Any updates on when/if it will be supported?

Hi,
i bought a CRS354-48P-4S+2Q+RM and find in the routerbord menu the option to change to SwOS.
Tried but switch never turn on, after reset it return back to RouterOS.

Is it normal for me to see the offer for SwOs even though it has not yet been released? Or was it released (even if I can't find any trace in the changelogs) and has some bugs?

Has anyone had the same problem as me? If so, how was it solved?

Thanks

"Testing" is at v6.48rc1 on Dec. 11/2020 @ 12h38.. with no word of SwOS in the release notes of either.

Two days to come up with an update. hahaha

I know it's probably pointless since it's going to happen only when they're ready but I'm going to add my voice in here anyways that SwOS for the CRS354 really really needs to happen. I picked up a demo unit crs354-48p-4s+2q+rm with very little previous Mikrotik experience hoping I could consolidate a pair of TP-Link switches in my rack and take advantage of the 10GbE ports to speed up my file copies to and from my main workstation to my NAS. But RouterOS is just an absolute kick in the teeth if you're not ready for it. I mistakenly thought SwOS was an option since I do almost no layer 3 routing on my network and I'm quite happy with PFsense as a router/firewall so I wouldn't need the features of RouterOS. I accept that I missed that SwOS was not an option but it seems extremely reasonable to expect it since I feel like people are more likely to use this as a big switch than a ridiculous huge but underpowered router.

I had hoped to swap this switch in and get my pretty basic configuration up and running in a few hours (just a couple of VLANs since the consolidations of two switches and the 10GbE options were supposed to eliminate all the LAGGs I had setup before) but I'll be damned if this thing doesn't look like it's going to take a week to learn to setup now.

Please update this AWESOME switch to SwOS!!

ROS is just wayyyy too complicated for 99% of what this switch would be used for.

I agree with others, pFsense & 24/48port POE switch from Mikrotik make for a potent combination.

But SwOS makes life 100x easier.

I was hoping I could figure out ROS enough to do VLAN's...eh not really.

Looking at the v6.49 beta 22 notes, it appears they're fixing issues across multiple devices and SwOS on the CRS354 has sorta been kicked aside.

Downloading & installing shortly to see if it just went unmentioned.

No good news.. yet.

- Fans run at what seems like max speed. Bug.
- Under the "RouterBOARD" heading, there's an option to select SwOS at boot, but the CRS354 only shows 32 ports. Still.

Whatcha gonna go with? Hard to find something with 10Gb and 40Gb along-side 48-port PoE. Ubiquiti doesn't innovate well enough for my liking.. though I'm unsure on that goofy display. Seems more of a cash grab item, as I'd be just as happy seeing it on a web GUI. A combination of CRS326-24S+2Q+RM (vs. US-16-XG) and CRS328-24P-4S+RM (vs. USW-24-Gen2-Pro-PoE/24P,2S+ or USW-48-Gen2-Pro-PoE/48P,4S+) seems tempting.

Price performance, I'd say MikroTik wins, but seemingly release hardware too soon before everything works on it.

I can't disagree with you on the tech specs but the best tech in the world is pointless if you can't use it and I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince a router that it's a switch.

I didn't read the specs i.e. that it was RouterOS only, my bad but the lack of response from MikroTik to one of the biggest threads in the SwOS section of the forum is pretty poor and would seem to indicate that it's not a priority to them.

When I bought mine, it was listed as being a dual capable device. They have to be aware of the scrutiny that customers have dished out, and itโ€™s actually sad how little comments they do post.. and even more so, a lack of updates regarding SwOS.

I'm waiting to buy the device until a SwOS Release is in clear sight...

The currently running Aruba Switch Firmware pisses me off but without SwOS there is no real improvement in easy and even more fast managability.

And I also was tricked by Mikrotik - no SwOS - that was my hole plan for this switch :( Used hours trying to boot it from SwOS and couldn't understand why it didn't work after boot. Found this forum thread and now i know...

Good news people.. sorta! We are a step closer to SwOS on our CRS354 series. RouterOS v6.48.2 came with a note SwOS menu list is available (I don't know why they put that in there, as it's been accessible for a while,) but once SwOS v2.13 is released, we'll be golden! ๐Ÿ˜

SwOS v2.13 dropped today for the CRS354 switches! It's no longer missing in action. =)

EDIT: managed to boot swos on CRS354 after executing the following in RouterOS
 /system swos upgrade
and reseting the config

What is your experience with SwitchOS since it dropped? I'm still holding off buying the CRS354 due to the still unresolved port 1-8 issue.

How to exactly install SwOS on this Mikrotik switch? I currently have RouterOS 6.48.1 running on it and I've downloaded SwOS 2.13 .bin file for this switch. Where to go from here? Normally on other switches you have the option to send a firmware file to the switch through web gui and update it from there. Can't see this kind of option in this case.

Good post re /system swos upgrade

I had a 354 which I gave up on getting SwOS running on - so I placed it in the Mikrotik stock pile of "thing that don't work".
Today I pulled it out and did the ROS upgrade then the SwOS upgrade , booted to SwOS and presto .... My 354 is now running SwOS.
One thing I noticed - the 354 has four sfp+ ports but SwOS shows them as "SFP1 SFP2 SFP3 SFP4" with no "+" in the name.

Sooooo , with all of the PoE ports ... I got to thinking about something .....
This 354 would be a great PoE switch at some of my remote towers. I have multiple 10-Gig fiber to 3 of my remote tower locations. Which means I might be able to all tower switches and put this bad-boy there.
Only one thing .... I am getting away from backup generator power and 110VAC UPS systems. The remote generators are impossible to service in the winter when the snow is over 6-feet deep. And when the power goes out for hours to days , the UPS systems have all died after the first few hours. So , I am thinking the following :
Is it possible to remove the AC power supply from a 354 and replace the power supply with it with a 24-Volt-DC/48-Volt-DC cable - then connect the new cable to my external 24-Volt DC-UPS battery backup system ? If I can power this bad-boy off of 24-Volts-DC ( no 48-Volts needed ), then similar to the NetPower16-P, I can get days to weeks on battery power when the utility power goes out ???

Hi!

I'm tempted to buy this switch to run swos for a project.

can someone confirm the following points:

- port speed (manual) config for the ethernet ports: set 100m full duplex => actually receive 100m in/out?
- shaper/policer: limit an indiviual 1g ethernet port to 100m in/out => actually receive 100m in/out?

kind regards

Ok, so far my experiance with MikroTik has been terrible.

Few things:

I've updated RouterOS from 46.1 to 48.2. (Not perfect - after choosing "download and install" option the switch stated that it is rebooting but it did not restart after 10 or more minutes of waiting - I had to manually power cycle the switch...

1. Does "shutdown" and "reboot" options that are available in web interface do not power cycle / power off the switch? From my experiance, it does not matter if I choose either "shutdown" or "reboot", the system turns off, but the switch keeps running. I have to take out the power cord and then put it in for the switch to start up. In case of "shutdown" option it is acceptable, but in "reboot" option is extremly stupid. Reboot option shout turn off the system and then turn it on, I shoudl not have to manually power cycle the switch. How stupid is that?

2. After updating RouterOs from 48.2 to a testing version (6.49beta46) that has SwOS available, two switches do not turn on. I cannot reset them with the use of the "reset" button taht is on the chasis. Tried all three methods: release when the green LED is blinking, release when the green LED is solid and release it when the LED turns off. Nothing works. Are these switches bricked?

3. What is strange I've managed to update RouterOs to 6.49beta46 on one switch and then boot it into SwOs. Why it worked on one CRS354-48P-4S+2Q+ and it is not working on two others I have no idea.

If you power on the device, it power on.

Shutdown is for moving or leave unpowered the device, with graceful shutdown, is not to put on standby like TV.

About Reboot, I don't exactly understand what you have writed, but if you really mean "what is the purpose of the reset",
is a function present on every device, not only MikroTik, and makes me think that on reality the stupid is you.

I mean that if I choose to reboot the switch what it should do is this: turn off the system and after that, turn the system back on (just like it works on PCs).

Insted, what it does: turns off the system and it does not turn the system back on.

So basically, shutdown and reboot options do the same thing (turn the os off and leave the switch unaccessable (i have to manually power cycle the switch for it to turn the os on again), which is bad. At least that is how it worked for me so far in 48.2 on CRS354-48P-4S+2Q+.

Is it possible to install only SwOS on this switch? Or RouterOS has to be installed on the devince anyway?

What useless question is?
Installed or not, do not change any of SwOS functionality.
