I’m a new Mikrotik user and have just received an LHG LTE to use for broadband at home.
I would prefer to use the LHG as a modem only as I am happy with my existing router and how this manages my fairly extensive network.
For now I have left the LHG set up as a router though, simply to make the task of initial testing more straightforward. I’m happy that it is working very well with my data sim and get excellent d/l & u/l speeds, so far so good!
My router connects fine via its WAN port which is currently set to DHCP so receives its current WAN address from the DHCP server in the LHG.
So next I’m trying to find out how to configure the LHG as a modem, and whether I can configure any port forwarding or other functions in my main router to allow access to the management GUI in the LHG. This is where I’ve quickly fallen way out of my depth as I’ve found posts that discuss using passthrough, others that mention using vlans, and what look like CLI changes to various config files in the device.
Is there a slightly less complex post anywhere that I’ve missed that might explain my options here and the pros/cons of any particular approach?
If it’s not easy to use “modem mode” and still maintain access to the management GUI then do I simply unplug the ethernet cable from the LAN port of my router and connect the LHG to my laptop? If this does not work then how can I get access to the management of the LHG again?
Sorry if these are really basic questions! Out of the box initial setup has been very straight forward, and I’m impressed with the hardware/performance, so hopefully with a bit of help I can soon get up to speed with the OS configuration too.
