Ampache & RouterOS web server on hAP ac2

Wed Sep 09, 2020 7:37 am

I recently purchased two hAP ac^2. They are absolutely brilliant. One is running VPN with DDNS so I can connect to my local computers from a remote office. I would also like to stream my mp3's to my phone and laptop while away. I'd like to run Ampache -- https://github.com/ampache on RouterOS. Is that possible, or do I have to consider porting to OpenWRT?

P.S. Now that google play music is going away, I no longer have a means of streaming my own collection without a paid service. I'd also like to have ultimate control over the quality of mp3's (or lossless) I would be streaming.

Router is not general purpose server. Unfortunately for you.
You cannot run such software inside routeros.
More than that you don't need it. For example VLC can play from smb shares directly without any streaming server at all.

Bad luck. Why you thought that it should be possible?

It's possible with OpenWRT

Small difference is that OpenWRT is open (it's relatively normal Linux distribution) but RouterOS is not (you can't install anything yourself).

Guys, please read my original post. Obviously, I do not want to install OpenWRT. I like RouterOS. I don't want to stop using it. Based on what you both are telling me, the software is not implemented. I get it. Let's get it on the feature request, then.

you got it right - it is not implemented. What you did not get is, that it will never be implemented.

As it was said earlier, router is not a multipurpose device and should not be perceived that way.
Some people like to tinker with their devices so they managed to run this music screaming server on their openwrt router. That does not mean it is correct thing to do and neither it means we all should do that. It definitely does not mean that Mikrotik developers should waste time on a feature which is absolutely irrelevant to routing.

If you want this, simply grab a raspberry PI or other lowcost device designed for tinkering and play with that one.

Your only chance to ever see this in RouterOS is if MikroTik added support for custom (third-party) packages and someone else then created one for this software. But don't be holding your breath for it, so far they didn't show any interest in such thing.

This is not going to happen. We all know how slow, buggy and complicated is the routeros development and it was mentioned in the past that routeros will not accept third party packages to run also due to security reasons.

Just take router as a router, be glad for many related features and their manageability and obtain the appropriate server for all the other functions you need.
