60G Aiming Methods

Thu Nov 19, 2020 2:43 pm

I have been using "TX Sector Info" and adjusting until the aim is close to 0 left/right and 0 up/down.

I have read of others locking to a single direction, then aiming based on RSSI.

What is the preferred aiming method for 60 GHz customers and/or 60 GHz PTP links?

Is there an aiming tool in Winbox or in the App that is useful and replicates "/interface w60g align wlan60-1", or do you just navigate to wlan60-1 -> Status if using a GUI?

Thank you, Chris

This link is about disabling beamforming (the second option I suggested) for getting better aim. The 2nd and 4th posts are normis suggesting it is unnecessary.

So, I suppose I can gather that some people prefer to turn off beamforming for aiming, while MikroTik generally suggests using beamforming for aiming. Unless you had something specific to suggest.

I just hoped the information was useful.
What I understood was that due to beamforming aiming is facilitated (should not be precise, as the beam will correct deviation). So the beam needs not be centered precisely.
Due to beam correction aiming based on the signal strength is imprecise if beam-forming is active. (The beam will adjust opposite to the aiming correction.
( The TX-sector number layout and/or TX-Sector-info gives the direction?))

But the usable method fully depends on the devices radiation pattern (from 60 degrees to less than one degree)

Does beamforming only work in the TX direction, or RX as well? I ask because only TX sector is reported in the CLI "interface w60g monitor 0", and winbox reports RX sector always 96 (or at least I haven't seen any other values there). It could be that RX beamforming works but is just not reported correctly. If it works only for TX, then precise alignment is still needed for the best RX signal.
