I wish there was more information about the book, like a "look inside" to at least see what the table of contents is.
$60 is a lot to spend based only on amazon reviews, without knowing what is covered. And this is especially true for a book published in 2016, which is arguably obsolete, especially since v7 has been released.
The Tyler Hart books at least have "look inside". But they are study guides, and I don't have any idea if they answer any of the why is it done this way questions, and for me that is very important. I don't want a book that "preps" you to pass an exam, I want to understand how things work so the knowledge can be applied to new situations.
And I don't know if anything exists for home users that just want a recipe book for how to setup something more complex than the quickset or default configs allow.
On the Ubiquiti EdgeMAX forums, there a many noob questions that are re-asked on a regular basis. Some of the most common:
Why is my router so slow?
Why isn't port forwarding working?
How do I create vlans for IoT devices? (and shortly after, why doesn't chromecast/sonos/DLNA/printer discovery etc work any more?), and why can't I ping windows computers on a different subnet?
How can I get vpn to work?
There seem to be more english language youtube videos covering these topics for the Edgerouter than for the MikroTik routers. And there were some good EdgeMAX videos by Ben Pin that were well focused and had relatively high technical content. There seem to be quite a few non-english youtube and MUM presentations (but many of these appear to be "infomercials", with just teaser info).
For MikroTik RouterOS there is The Network Berg youtube channel, that I have been watching. I wish he had a place where he provided exports of the examples he covered, like Ben Pin did in his videos.
And I don't know of anything similar to what Mike Potts has for the ER-X, Ubiquiti Home Network.pdf
https://github.com/mjp66/Ubiquiti/raw/m ... etwork.pdf That is a great resource for home users that want a more complex setup than the Edgerouter setup wizards can create.
The problem with the MikroTik forums is finding posts that apply to the hardware you have, for the version you are using, and have accurate info. But this is also true for any vendor's forum.
It appears that some of the posts that used to be in the wiki are gone. Here's an example (now only available on the wayback machine)
