Looking for a Product (Router)

Sun Dec 27, 2020 11:14 am

Hi Guys,

I've made some positive experience with an entry level MK from a friend and would like to get myself something to match my needs for a small business. Here is the list of "needs" I have and I hope you can recommend something to match it:
- I have duplex 1 gbit connection from my ISP provided by a simple lan port (no modem or whatsoever).
- My WiFi is a Zyxel Mesh in AP mode, so I don't need anything in that regard
- All the "Important" Hardware runs via a gbit lan, however my server is capable of 2.5 gbit as well as 10 gbit on each of the two NICs - so if there is a good option for an Upgrade I'm happy to grab it.
- I would like to have LTE (or 5G) Fallback as sometimes we have power outages and my ISPs switch will turn off (my Hardware runs via UPS).
- I want to provide Access to the network via VPN (preferably OpenVPN over UDP with compression).
- I assume I don't have to metion DHCP, Powerforwarding, VLANs, etc

Usually I have about 15 active clients inside the LAN and about 3-5 connecting via VPN.

Happy about any Input,

Kind Regards and merry xmas :)

A bit hard to recommend. 5G is not supported by Mikrotik, so LTE is the only option. Also Mikrotik support for OpenVPN is kind of "meh" (OpenVPN UDP is only supported in ROS7 which is beta, only TCP mode in ROS6). Would highly recommend sticking to L2TP/IPSEC or IPSEC/IKE2 instead.

If you ignore the LTE part, then RB4011iGS+RM would be the perfect router IMO. Has nice throughput as well as 1bgps IPSEC throughput.

I don't see anything else close to RB4011iGS+RM that could have LTE support. There is always an option to purchase a modem separately (does not have to be a Mikrotik + having modular setup allows you to upgrade modem without upgrading other hardware).

Let's see what others would recommend. I believe you could also survive with cheaper options or routers with LTE support too, but if you could afford paying few bucks more and getting a more powerful router - you are giving everyone a nicer internet experience. :)

Concur, dont scrimp on the router.
MT makes many interesting 4G (LTE) products with built-in modems and some with multiple sim slots.
Not sure about other vendors
As for VPN, I would use wireguard and I believe that is available in the beta so will come to OS by the time you get your covid vaccination. ;-)

You heard some exciting news back from MT devs? Or you're expecting your COVID vaccination in 2023? ;-)

Riiight... let's hope features were back-ported from v7. I'd say bugs are v6 native ;-)
