Wifi 7 - MikroTik when???

Sun Dec 05, 2021 10:40 pm

https://www.androidauthority.com/wi-fi- ... e-3069524/

In 2023 or 2024 we can expect wifi 7 draft.
Do you think that Mikrotik will fully support wifi 6 in 2030?
I am writing this with little sarcasm, but when I look at your competitors (the cheapest tplink now supports 802.11ax), I feel like 10 years back. (At least Nstreme fix was finally resolved after many years of complete ignorance and silence.

When I see new newsletter, I read it with hope that something brutally will be shown. (maybe something like airfiber, or enterprise network monitoring system, warp drive :))), but no. We have brand new poe injector. Or 15 port reverse poe switch. Anything that majority of Isp providers does not need (knot, bluetooth, iot, ...)

We need to do several Gigabits through air for kilometers. I dont want sometimes spend whole day or days troubleshooting, why the hell mpls does not work. Or OSPF is constantly flapping.

Seriously, I work 20 years in this segment, have several thousands of customers, but sometimes it is unbearable. We buy new device (for example crs354 48 port poe switch). It should work flawlessly for this price, right? No! For couple of months it had to be rebooted, because of 1-8 ports problem.

Thats my point of view and as big MikroTik fan I hope, that somebody will really start to listen, what customers want and need.

Complete agreement.
Even the cheapest TPlink offers the AX standard ...

Mikrotik still runs on AC and offers Wave2 on a very limited number of products. No outdoor product with Wawe2
:-( :-(
Will we ever see AX, a spectral scan on AC hardware that you promised?

We really don't need KNOT, Outdoor power supply, new injectors etc ...
:-(

wifi-6e ---> NetGear Orbi WiFi 6E ( This is the fastest of the fastest Mesh system available for any home --- nothing is faster ! ))
If you want speed , read-up on Wi-Fi 6E and the 2.4 & 5 & 6-7 GHz band

anav , are you a WISP engineer ?
I've found that my best paying , fastest customers are all slowly moving to the Netgear Orbi Wi-Fi 6E mesh system.
One of my issues is that Mikrotik has zilch - zero - natta - nothing that can legally talk in 6 6GHz band and even more , nothing that does WiFi-6E in the 6-to-7 GHz band.
Wi-Fi 6E is in-stock at all of the major stores right now and have been there all summer long now.
If Mikrotik had Wi-Fi 6E products , I could of sold a few hundred by now.

I agree, but you must be in a $$market. No one around here is shelling out those bucks for wifi.
Even mozerd notes its his well to do clients that can afford to get them.
I can see if you are a wisp client this could be a game changer and the need justifies the cost, but for an average home, dont think so.

Mikrotik Wi-Fi 6E

I could sure use some additional frequencies for my Mesh networks - the existing 5 GHz band is congested, noisy, slow and competing with cellular LTE-U (#46). There is no such thing as a clean 5 GHz channel these days.

Wi-Fi 6E offers the additional capabilities:
59 additional 20 MHz channels
29 additional 40 MHz channels
14 additional 80 MHz channels
7 additional 160 MHz channels

yes, if MT wants to get back into the home wifi game........they need to ensure a future RB5009 comes with either wifi6 and preferably 6E
The next capac series should be wifi6 and preferably 6E.

This will happen when glaciers cover all of Europe :-)

If you unpack wave2.npk there is firmware for the following WIFI6 devices: IPQ5018, IPQ6018, IPQ8074.
Seems wifi6 is coming in the observable future.

So does wave2 = wifi6 as I thought wave2 was a covid thing. ;-P
Current wifi on the capac is like my TP LINK EAP 245 with a virus (half a lung)..........

MT will be using vendor firmware just like a tp-link. No bicycle invention. There is a tiny chance they won't mess it completely. Will see.

TPlink not only supports Wifi 6. Their latest flagship even has motorized active antenna! I'm not sure if this is just a gimmick, but it looks amazing.

@TomjNorthIdaho ... You are 100% correct .... in FACT what is driving 6E sales is just the facts that you have articulated .... only problem is 6E supply is very limited ... my wait time for 6E gear now is 2 - 4 weeks and I am told that if current supply chain is not freed up this will get much worse. Biden and the Democrats has completely destroyed the free flow of goods in my continent and with the current inflation trend prices will rise dramatically. China now controls everything ....

WTF, supply chain problems have nothing to do with who is in power in the US LOL. Try hmmm let me see.. an effing pandemic maybe? :-PP
Also the spill over cascading effect of one ship holding up the SUEZ canal for quite some time is not trivial, and I am sure we are still paying for it all around the world.
I am also not crying over split milk of your more affluent customers, that can afford 6E, having to wait. Boo hoo for first world problems! :-)

If you really cared you would send all your 6E inventory to Tom ;-), for folks that live in the boonies and cannot get any internet and cannot afford Telsa Boy's sky network.

Supply chain … btw, … Biden and the Democrats took down the oil and gas industry in the USA … energy drives everything … you probably also believe that inflation is a byproduct of COVID …. btw, you do notice that I used the word HATE.

Why wait? Seriously... why? Buy products from other brands that offer WiFi6(E) if you need WiFi6 today. If you have customers that would benefit from WiFi6 you better offer a solution, or someone else will. Don't get me wrong. I like Mikrotik a lot and I use a lot of their products, but if I come across a challenge I can not solve using Mikrotik I look for other brands for solutions. I would be very happy to see a WiFi6 product from Mikrotik, but sorry, I can't afford to wait any longer or competition will start taking my customers. All major brands offer WiFi6 products TODAY, in-stock. Time is money.

The fact that Mikrotik is late with wave2 by at least 5 years doesn't mean they should simply skip it. Those who survived without wave2 will still be happy to use it on MT gear. And it can still be a big thing. Those who left for other vendors surely won't loose sleep over it.

And we all certainly hope MT will do something about wifi6E and wifi7 sooner than in 5 years.

MT has a bunch of hardware with wave2-capable chipsets. wave2 is a separate package at the moment and needs more free space than most devices even have flash memory. But I think the roadmap of MT is, to get the wave2 thingy stable so they do not need a separate package anymore. They would just integrate it into the regular ROS release - but definitely targeted for each model. And I guess this is what it makes difficult, because they currently have architecture-releases. In fact they need to switch to model-specific binaries so they can keep npk-size small. Or they could integrate the wave2 functionality into ROS, and provide the firmware/drivers in a separate package.

It's time to switch to other brand that listen to users and don't spend time on this 90x style hardware!

It will take years for the WiFi 7 become mainstream. WiFi 6 is becoming standard more or less now and many people are still on WiFi 5.

Quite... one of my biggest single locations is a wedding barn which can have 50+ users albeit not high volume users. They're still on Wi-Fi 4 and no real complaints. I'd prefer them to focus on getting the current wireless issues resolved before moving on. There are just too many posts about problems with the AX line. For example " MikroTik hAP ax3 poor WiFi performance" has 43,089 views. I'm going to guess that any device older than maybe 3 years is still Wi-Fi 5. My only Wi-Fi 6 device is my new mobile.

question is, what real benefits does such a 35USD device bring over a MikroTik hAP ax3, for example. Is there a difference at all, or just the name? would be interesting to test and see

With a great community like this, and with a company that are very adoptive to our wishes, and of course lots of updates of there software with new features and bug fixes.

Thank you Mikrotik

Aside but Xiaomi really are challenging the lower end of the market. Sadly cheaper Mikrotik kit is no longer price competitive in the UK. £30 for a mAP lite when TP-Link TL-WA801N is £22 - compare form factors, mAP lite should be cheaper to make. I'm tempted to get a Xiaomi access point to see what it's like. Already got a Xiaomi phone.

Later.. £25 for an AC1200 with four antennas... how are they making them so cheap!

I guess one benefit of getting a Wifi 7 router now if you are in the market for a new router would be: future proofing

...when more devices support it then obvious benefit should be speed.

I see TP-Link, Asus and Netgear all have Wifi 7 routers available. I wouldn't be surprised if new Apple devices and MacBooks coming soon will also support it and other manufacturers too.

In either case, Wifi 6 is more than adequate for my needs.

This could a real argument for anyone buying devices in bulk and commercial use.

Because they are manufacturer the whole chain down themselves? And maybe export-products are even "subventionated" by Chinese government as well.

The ONLY benefit I see with wifi7 is the additional frequency spectrum so there is less interference.

<joke>maybe heavily subsidised price for local market, so that all population uses it, and then ... suprise spyware inside</joke>
You may remove those joke quotes.
This is sadly enough reality for some products coming from there.

guys... MikroTik is cheap af, what do you want? Yes, TP-Link is maybe a little cheaper, but with trash firmware and WiFi dying after few years...

But yes, I'm also looking forward to Wi-Fi 7. But I would be more pleased with VLANs at wifi-qcom-ac :) i mean real VLAN per client, not setting PVID

Because they are manufacturer the whole chain down themselves? And maybe export-products are even "subventionated" by Chinese government as well.
i think that's the reason, but who i am to know. point is - both xiaomi and tplink offer cheap and fast routers. i have a xiaomi mi 4a gigabit router, the settings are a disaster but it's the cheapest gigabit router on local market (usually around 20eur, and go down to 15eur when on sale) that has strong and fast wifi. it covers a whole house floor with speeds over 300mbit on wifi. a 15uer device!
tplink also , their c6 is just a bit more expensive but has a lot of options more, and is kinda supported by openwrt. it's been my way-to-go router for apartment installs that got fiber.

PS i've got a phone that, suposedly, supports wifi 6e/wifi 7 (xiaomi 13t pro), yet when i tried setting up such high frequency on my hap ac lite (superchannel, 5955) the phone didn't see the network. so, even bigger question is when will wifi7 get into normal usage.

it is not enough to support high frequency, you need a wifi 6e chip in the router. hAP ac lite doesn't have it and no mikrotik product has it.

Look at WiFi 6...introduced in 2019 and MT has router now...so count + 5 years from now...so WiFi 7 is coming in 2029.

Wifi 7 actually has some nice features...

* Multi-Link Operation (MLO) - the ability to connect to multiple bands and aggregate bandwidth
* 4K-QAM - packs signals more densely, better transmission rates
* Multi-Resource units (MRU) - less interference, more reliable
* 320 Mhz band

Lot's of improvements and shouldn't be snuffed at as just another speed bump :)

I know that WiFi7 has some nice features on paper, I'm wondering if the mentioned 30USD device has them too and they work ;)

Yes ... and I can predict that WiFi 7 will be an enormus success, first with the high end and Middle Class market ... I am aware that all the BIG names are in a ready set go stage because many enterprise corps will moving into Wifi 7 faster than U can say cheeze [many are in trials now] .... yes the high end will be expensive but the benefits will justify the expense.

I'm sure that MikroTik already has devices with WiFi 7 support in development. It's almost as certain as native Winbox for Linux being nearly ready.

I don't think MikroTik uses any MediaTek wifi chips?
A question - what chips do they use?

Qualcomm are excellent chips, packed with features, but they are also more expensive, this is why it is very hard for MikroTik to compete with some noname brand prices. There are cheaper chip makers that offer less features etc.

Yup should be standard chip in every new wifi product.
BULK purchase should get MT best price :-)

I'm holding off waiting for the 5009 - WIFI 7 combo product.......... but Normis, why not add another 2.5 gig, as the Marvel chip allows up to 3 SerDes interfaces ( you only have a 10gig and 2.5g port). It also allows 8 gig ports and you have only seven. So I see at least one additional port added to make this device really SPICY!!
(note: I would say add a 5gig port, but there is no point as WAN throughput would probably max out around 3Mbps anyway)

I think MT should skip 6E noise, its a lame duck. ( trust MT to have a handle on market analysis - Wish they had more coders but a balance keeps company viable )

Calm down guys, we have such and better products planned, but development takes time :D Like I have said previously, WiFI7 should take a lot less time, because now we have the new wifi drivers and that was the biggest delay by far, why AX products came later than desired.

How close do you sit to your router?

Give us routers that pass it.
Switches that can power access points and pass the full speed of traffic.
Then access points that match.

I am really happy to see my favorite equipment manufacturer catching WiFi 7train on time. :)
@Normis, in theory, will we see great benefits from WiFi 7 in PtP enviroments (I hope that you're planing to release something in that segment) ?

I just hope they release something with a MediaTek SoC at least eventually.

In my understanding, MikroTik has a very distinct pricing problem and its name is "IPQ-". They use relatively high-end Qualcomm SoCs in routers that are there mostly to do dumb things.

Does an "ax lite" really need an "IPQ-" class processor? And at the cost of giving up 5GHz entirely? Come back to your senses, Axlite! It was said that you would destroy overpriced hardware, not join it!

We really need a "hAP be lite" that would be true to the spirit of hAP ac lite. Make it $80-100. But make it fully tri-band, 802.11be and all. Or make it $50-70, and ditch either 2.4GHz or 6GHz. And if you need to use a MediaTek SoC to make this happen, do it. If RouterOS doesn't support this because drivers or something, write better drivers. Don't put all of your money on Qualcomm. Income diversification and stuff, basic investment advice.

And just please, pretty please, make it wall-mountable. You probably have some ac lite TC type cases lying around still, put them to good use.

From my perspective - I wish to get rid of my 3 Asus wifi 6 AX ZenWifi XT8 and replace them with Mikrotik routers. MikroTik hAP ax3 seem way better, not in term of day to day use but in terms of security (who cares about speed in Belgium when the best ISP provides 400mbs to 1gps). It still feels remotely dumb to spend 280 Euros to get these machines when wifi 7 is about to arrive. What I am most concerned about is SECURITY. Asus WPA3 Personnal comes in with a hidden WPA2-PSK-CCMP signal that is most likely used by the device to manage mesh. That seems to defeat the whole purpose of having a WPA3 only network. Asus firmware crashes for weird reasons. It's buggy - not documented and does not come with a lot of security hardening options. My wish list for a new device would include a new device alert option as well as all kinds of hardening opportunities for things that are to detect for routers but that should be part of WIFI defence: WIDS/WIPS, rogue access point detection & alerts, same for evil twins, jamming & deauth attack detections, preventions & alerting. I am not a major expert, but that's what I find missing for homes AP / wireless routers. Sometimes people just do mischief on home networks just because they are good with these topics and know that most devices won't notice / alert.

@PG, MT has been busy over the past (seems like a century) year or two, modernizing their WIFI setup in RoS and thus the transition for them to adopt WIFI7 should be relatively smooth.

But it's about one the Frequencies needed for 7.
Carrier frequency can always be adjusted upwards pretty much without problem, except for penetration power and difficulty of building multiplier circuitry. If you can use WiFi 7 on 2.4 GHz, you can use it on 5, 6, 7, 57 or 69.420 GHz, as long as local regulations allow it. This is what they did here with WiFi 4. Frequency is not a problem, supporting the standard and extensions is.
