Hello fren.
yes, you try to move your HDD and NICs together to new machine for temporary. than run with mac-telnet
and later check your old machine one without system.

good luck...!!

samsoft08: I guess this must be the hardware problems.
Try to use other OS and see if the problem still appears.

dear Sam,
power supply failure dont mean that the PC will be turned off but the CPU or motherboard will hanging, almost never mean the power supply being dead. , sometimes a regulartor of PS will frazzled, What this means is that the cpu curren surge requirement has been steadily reduced. the motherboards are no longer suitable for older PS which are run CPU very hot and demands tremendous current surges. it will cause sys hanging too
maybe there r many reason happened from the local network or something lets know it from the others endeavors.

Regards

Over current on the power supply can most certainly create problems when a Power supply is underpowered for the hardware.

Regulators do not get frazzled unless they pop their tops (burn up).
The most common problem with pwer supplys is the Electrolytic Capacitors dry up, and noise passes through.

I have seen computers work fine while hard drives attempt to spin up to speed just to have their spindle stop, then restart to attempt to get back up to speed. Servos do not like noise.

I suspect that you either have a hardware scenario which is not fully supported by the OS or perhaps you have more underlying problems with your hardware (usually motherboard).

A while back we had routerOS restarting when we were trying the port-scan option in the firewall.

CPU would jump to 100% then the device would just reset.

i just changed the old PC to a brandnew one :
2.66G CPU , 80G HD , 1G RAM , 945 intel MB ..
the things which are the same :
compact flash reader , system on 128 Mb compact flash , the ethernet card mikrotik VIA chipset 4 ports ..
the system hang up again , just after 3 hours after running the new system !!!!!!!!
i need to know
1- could MT ethernet hang up the system if there's somthing wrong with it ? it's working perfect for 1 year .
2- is it the compact flash ? physical problem or the system need to totaly re-install on it ?
3- is there any device connected to MT couse this problem ? device like switch ?
4- is there any traffic couse the system hang-up ? like DoS maybe ?
note : the system doesnt reset , it is just hang-up without any respond to anything like keyboard !!!!
please i quit thinking i'm just waiting for any help .........

Dear sam,

Try to configure your MT OS as a new router no previous setting should be ther just reset your all configuration from setup.

and t3rm gives you a good idea to check your hardware to install another OS like win-XP and then check that your problem still there or not.

You can also change your 4 port lan card also to be sure.

Take care

Is it running from a CF or an MT module ?
I think the (mt supplied) modules are much better , recently with a CF in similar hardware on a remote site, couldn't ssh/winbox/mac-telnet from the backup MT box beside it on the same LAN. I just got someone to stick in a new card , fresh install/licence and its happy since.
Whereas have a MT module ( has v2.7rc4 written on it ! ) and its been through loads of power faults, surges etc no problem ( one bad enough to shear a lift motor shaft in the building)

Maybe CF is just "running out of life", I mean, it's reaching his write limit per sector, and it's behaving that strange.

To make sure there are no HW problems, I agree you should test HW with some kind of "standard" OS, like Windows XP or Linux, an run some stability tests (MemTest, CPUBurn, Everest,..).

so ? is the cf total write more than allowed ??

As you can read on the net (Kingston Flash Memory Guide Page 4), Modern flash units has a typical write/erase cycle of 10000 writes per sector.

If we suppose that free disk space has remained more or less constant over the time, you have written every time over the same sectors (maybe about 1MByte= ~2000sectors using defualt ext2-fs).
26008702 sectors at 2000sectors/MB are about 13000 write cycles, which are 30% over 10.000 recommended cycles,
supposing you have written only 1 MB, which I know cannot be possible, as system upgrades are about 8MB, but maybe about 20 cycles per sector (20 updates) so are not important in the numbers.

If my numbers are correct (are done a bit fast so can be miss calculated) your CF has simply reached his end of life and is claiming for a replace.

This is something that is not typical to occur, or at least, is not always considered. Also many of us haven't been working enough time yet with Flash memories to consider them to die by writing.

as in this topic :
http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php ... t=cf+flash

normis said:
we have yet to see a compact flash that has died running RouterOS. ROS doesn't do a lot of writes, plus the limitation is far more than you need. Plus, why do you think USB drives don't have this limit? They are the same
i dont think its a CF issue , i think its the weakness of DHCP network , i got some bad users who tried to get in free of charge , i wonder wht if a user use the same gateway IP as his PC IP ? or connect a router with the same MT gateway IP ?

Are you using the card as the hard drive for web-proxy? Cos that would cause heeeeaps of usage of the card and kill it a lot quicker.

If you want to use web-proxy install an ide hard drive and use that as the cache drive instead.

I dont use 128M CF as a cache disk ... thats for sure ..
i'm using 2 hard disks , one is IDE for system the other is SATA for cache ..
I made tests for days , I lost clients , lost a lot of money , at last I found that when I enable the web-proxy I have to wait for a sudden hang up at any time ..
I hope that MT team would note that problem , its a release candidate , its not the end of life if someone found a problem with it , beside the admins here always keep telling us write any problem you discover with it ..

could you send the support output file to support@mikrotik.com

Have you checked the free memory - does it decrease a lot while running? maybe there is a memory leak.
