Unable to initiate 1000M on MikroTik RB493G

Sun Feb 06, 2022 9:33 am

Hi,
I'm unable to initiate 1Gbps between my MikroTik RB493G ETH0/POE and ISPs router. If I disable "Auto negotiating" and set the speed to 1000M, connection is lost till I set 100M or enable auto negotiating. RouterOS version is 7.1.1 and RouterBoard version is 7.1.1 (basically, everything is updated). I'm not using PoE. MikroTik is powered via normal power adapter.
What tests I've performed currently:
1. Connected a notebook directly to ISPs router. Notebook shows 1Gbps and Speedtest.net shows 800Mbps Up/500Mbps Down.
2. Via the same cable I've connected ISPs router <-> MikroTik RB493G ETH0/POE. MikroTik shows only 100Mbps connection to ETH0/POE port. Switching auto negotiating off and setting to 1000M doesn't help, because I get disconnected after setting 1000M to ETH0.
3. Via the same cable I've connected ISPs router <-> MikroTik RB493G ETH4 and MikroTik shows 1000M connection.

Any ideas why ETH/POE on MikroTik RB493G doesn't allow to initiate 1000M connection? How can I fix that?
I'm thinking, if ISPs router wasn't working correctly, it even didn't initiate 1Gbps between my notebook and MikroTik ETH4 (or any other port). Something is probably related to ETH0 and I need your help with troubleshooting and fixing.

What do I see if I run "interface ethernet monitor" on ETH0:
/interface ethernet monitor
numbers: 0
;;; WAN
name: ether1-GW
status: link-ok
auto-negotiation: done
rate: 100Mbps
full-duplex: yes
tx-flow-control: no
rx-flow-control: no

I wouldn't believe it had I not encountered it myself, but there may be a mechanical incompatibility between the plug on the cable and the receptacle on the device (the RB493G in this case as the PC links to the ISP modem at full gigabit). The /interface ethernet monitor clearly shows that the RB493G can only see the peer to offer 10 and 100 Mbps speeds, which may be caused by one of the wires 4, 5, 7, or 8 to have a bad contact.

In worse case, one of these wires may have lost contact internally, or the electronic circuitry may be broken.

I'd check whether the PC links at 1000 Mbps to eth0 of Mikrotik, which is a step you apparently did not try, to exclude a possibility of misunderstanding between the ISP gear and the RB493 in speed negotiation.

I'd also try another cable, preferably from a different manufacturer. Or if nothing else, just swap the ends of the existing one.

If none helps, an ohmmeter should show an "almost short circuit" between wires 1&2, 3&6, 4&5, and 7&8 - internally, the pairs are terminated at transformers that have almost zero resistance for DC:

If it doesn't, there's a plug/receptacle compatibility problem or an internal problem on the 493 (given the design, this would be inside the receptacle which seems to include these transformers). If these pairs "beep", there may still be a soldering problem between the receptacle and the PCB.

Hi,
now I've tested with a couple of cables (different manufacturers), which can initiate 1000Mbps via other interfaces (e.g. 4 or 6) and connected to ETH0 my notebook. I still can see maximum 100Mbps via ETH0. When the same cable and the same notebook is connected to ETH3, I see 1000Mbps. So, ISP router, cable and notebook shouldn't be a root cause here.
Can you clarify a bit, which micro controller do I need to check? There is a picture of RB493G router.

I did not have in mind measuring on the microcontrollers; I had in mind measuring the pairs on the Eth0 port from outside.

Rb493 or Ah in the picture. Not G
