V7.2 OpenVPN

Hello Friends,

We finally have dude server in V7 but it seems there are other problems. After upgrading to V7.2 from 6.49.5, OpenVPN clients from other mikrotik routers (some of them still 6.49.5 and some 7.2)and windows machines keeps disconnecting right after it connects. I tried many things to change in the server settings but without results.
Does anyone know why this happens?

Whatever I do in V7.2 for OpenVPN, I can't make it work. I am using the same ways for server setup and self signed certificates on mikrotik which I used for years. Does anyone have an example of working setup?

My best guess is because you're using OpenVPN on RouterOS.
Try switching to something else more stable and better implemented, you had years to think about something better.

1. All that "better openvpn solutions" first made a headache for us
2. I disagree about Your guess because it worked excellent without a single drop for years on more than 150 locations
3. With all due respect, Your reply wasn't helpful.

Switch back to the last version that worked and stick to it.

If possible, I would do that right away but I have no idea if it is going to work. The devices are all on a remote locations and if i brick them then I will have even bigger problems. ;( Did You ever try to downgrade to latest V6 from any V7?

Unfortunately, these two routers I upgraded are with dude server and dude is not available in V7.1.5. I have to go back to 6.49.5. Possible?

I don't know, there is always the possibility of something going wrong.

Not a problem stick with 7.2 and use wireguard vice openvpn to establish tunnels.
Very smooth, if you do your homework!!

sorry i have no idea why your OpenVPN not work in the newer ROS.

We have a some(about 500) of (IoT) connections to few "serverrouter" and they work fine with 7.2.
Most client(IoT) devices are on "long term 6.48"
Since few weeks we have some wireguard(testing) connections with newer ROS devices.
Here an client config that will work with ROS 7.2(1).... on a arm-device (RB4011)

After upgrading to V7.2 ... windows machines keeps disconnecting right after it connects. I tried many things to change in the server settings but without results.

I am experiencing exactly the same problems after the 7.2 upgrade. My OVPN clients that keep disconnecting are Linux and Android.
I had no luck with all the changes I tried and finally downgraded to make it work again.

It happens to be as well but not with all routers. To be precise, the issue occurs only on a "mmips" device. Maybe there is some issue with thich architecture? I tried to take a look at debug logs on both sides but there is nothing useful to make use of. Certificate is okay, login credentials as well.

I alo tried basically everything - regenrating all certificates, re-importing them, deleting the whole configuration and startin over but have not succeeded. All the advices in here make sense, but in my case as well - I prefer to use OpenVPN as a backup service.

I have the same issue. After upgrade of RB1100AHx4 to ROS 7.2 (7.2.1) openvpn connection are not working. Client connects to a server and after a second server is reporting that client have dropped a connection

Client using ROS 7.1.3 was working properly with previous ROS (6.49.3) on server

Why OpenVPN is broken on 7.2+ on MMIPS architecture? Please answer ASAP...

BTW OpenVPN is broken for android connection on my MMIPS on 7.+ Again no answer for that...

I've run into the same issue with OpenVPN client on hEX S after upgrading it to the version 7.2.1. I'd downgraded firmware to the version 7.1.5 _AS_A_TEMPORARY_WORKAROUND_ and OpenVPN client on hEX S started working again. Will be waiting for the permanent solution and feedback from Mikrotik Support Team. I hope they will fix the issue soon. BTW - do I need to raise a separate ticket to Mikrotik Support Portal (on Jira) or they are reading and commenting posts in this forum on a regular basis?

I'd raised a support ticket and have just got a response from the Support:

The issue is already fixed in the latest RouterOS v7.3beta:
*) ovpn - fixed packet processing on MT7621A;

.. and here is the latest clarification from the Support:

Yes, the fix will be available in the RouterOS v7.2.2, but the release time is unknown yet. RouterOS v7.3 stable build is quite far.

So we need to be patient..

I'm having the same issue on CHR (x86_64). With 7.1.5, everything is worklng fine with the OpenVPN TCP road warrior conections. With 7.2.1 or 7.2.3, no connection is established. It looks like a timeout.

Any chance this is related?

I'm running 7.6 on powerpc (1100AH2x) and still have the issue with OVPN; there is no way to have it working.
Is this a powerpc-specific version-related issue? Has it been fixed for other platforms?

I just updated to 7.7rc1 (powerpc).
I rebuilt the whole configuration from scratch, but still no luck. I see many people and posts talking about this kind of issue, but no one has a working suggestion.
