Any plans for a small size SoHo router managing Gigabit WAN capacity?

Fri Jun 17, 2022 12:10 am

The topic kind of covers it? Any chance of Mikrotik developing a high perfomance small size router for SoHo usage? Eg form factor like RB750, but with power enough to manage Gigabit WAN link?

The rb4011 or rb5011 are too big for you?

have you tried
hAP ac² ?

not so powerful as 4011 or 5009 but at least twice the performance of rb750gr3 and almost the same form factor

Been using the hAP AC2 for that for years.

Now I use Hex-S with an GPON Stick on SFP port and can receive almost 900Mbps/900Mbps

I vote for Hex too.
Can not go smaller.

But the hAP AC2 is more than double the throughput, if you actually have to route and can't fast track the connection.

That's why I use it over the hex or hexS

The radio to me is a scanner only. And it doesn't always work for that either.

But it's 2 clicks to turn off those radios. Which I do... At every single install!

One time I used it's 2.4 radio to grab onto the managers hotspot on his phone. See they didn't pay their Cable internet
Bill and got shut off. On a long weekend... so they wouldn't turn it back on till Tuesday. The radio worked for that. At 5Ghz... It didn't even see some US frequency...

I have a CAP AC lying, unused due to useless Mikrotik Wifi. Maybe possible to use as mini-router?

Cap ac ?
Limited wifi for some purposes, I agree (though the one I have in use functions perfectly for what I need).

Useless, I wouldn't say.

It has 2 giga ether ports so you can already use it as a router.

Yes, looking at specs it seems to have same CPU and RAM as Hap AC2...

Used that as a router once in a pinch.

My routers tend to have a WAN feed or 2, a feed to a core switch, then a webpower switch and system monitor.

I just prefer the monitor and webpower switch be as close to the "bottom of the network" as possible. So anything above the switch is accessible for reboot or monitor.

RB4011 wifi model is great home router - use it at my house. Multiple VPN's, a few WAN's totalling about 1.3gbps, complex firewall, mangle, and queue rules. No slowdowns.

Well, I am looking for a truly small size router - RB4011 is way too big for my location...

I have no demanding rules or anything. Just plain FW and DHCP-server. Want Gigabit WAN capability.

Cap ac has a square cover in the box
Would make it smaller then hex.

Or leave the cover off...

...another option is RB450Gx4 ... case and PSU sold separately, though.

Bought myself a RB450GX4 with casing. Works perfectly.

Thanks for all good posts!

I bought myself RB450Gx4 with case and works great (along with Omada EAP245 as AP) and dozen of devices with 750Mbps WAN.

Thank you for good suggestion!
