nstreme latency

Fri Jun 18, 2004 10:30 am

I am seeing severe increase in latency when in nstreme mode.

On an 54km link (but also on 2-3km links!) I see strange behavior - when in normal mode the ping RTT is 1-2ms (at that time link carries approx 1mbit traffic). When in nstreme mode, RTT varies from 8 to 60ms .. rarely 1-3 ms.

Shouldn't the 'nstreme 'controlled' mode be more consistent on the timing?

I also fail to see the behavior John said should be expected - interfaces in nstreme mode still lose packets (or at least give ping timeouts) fhen pinging the neighbor router.

Are you using revision 7 with v2.8.11?

Yes.

In fact, revision 7 has improved things somewhat, but still large fluctuation in RTT.

I have tested this on my famous 57km link and to my dismay, after installing 2.8.11 revision 7 there were huge RTT values (300-500ms) with significant packet loss. I went to rise the noise treshold to -70dB (the link normaly has signal levels of 61-68). This improved things significantly.

Is it possible that revision 7 has changed some default parameters?

I now have 1-4ms RTT with rate peaks to 11-14ms while there are about 3Mbps of real-worls bidirectional traffic. I will try it on a more loaded link and post the results.

I don't think so.
