problem with unstable signal strength

Wed Sep 26, 2007 12:52 pm

hi all mikrotik gurus,
this is simple problem for u.
i have problem with signal strength
it varies -65 dBm to -80 dBm .so how can i get stable signal strength?
signal to noise is 18 dBm
Tx/Rx CCQ is 36/24.

plz anyone help me i will be appreciate.

plz plz help me.

more info is needed - distance, wireless cards, cpe configuration, wireless configuration, ROS version number, etc.

Same problem here. Improved after increasing Tx Power to 27dBm on both side, but still disconnects several times a day:

Distance: 1.7km
ROS: v2.9.46
Freq: 2.412
Band: 2GHz-5MHz
Tx Power Mode: Card Rates
Tx Power: 27dBm

AP: XR2 on RB532a
Noise Floor: -99dBm

CPE: XR2 on Rb133c
Tx/Rx Signal Strength: -78/-87
Noise Floor: -102 to -90
Signal to Noise: 3dBm
Tx/Rx CCQ: 35/57

Use quality connectors and cables, make sure that antennas are perfecly assured. Enable periodic calibration and configure correctly data rates and basic rates in the wireless interface.

Wow, today:
Signal To Noise: -4dBm
Noise Floor: -80dBm
Tx/Rx Signal fluctuating -73/-73 to -80/-94dBm

Don't care about speed, just want reliable connection. What would you recommend for Data Rates? Where do you find Basic Rates? What would you recommend for Calibration Interval? Do you enable calibration on both AP and effecting CPE? Will it effect other CPE's in the network?

Ouch, seems as if you are experiencing heavy interference ... well my suggestiong since youve noted that speed aint a priority is to use 1/2 of the channel bandwidth (i.e. 10mhz spectrum spacing) and that should give you more mobility as to escape the noise on the standard 22mhz channels. Also as noted before ensure connectors are ideal as they could easily make/break a link. (Heck for more spectrum mobility you would even use 1/4 spectrum <5mhz spacing> and that should clean things up a great deal).... If those above dont work then lastly change the polarity of both antennas to horizontal and u should be a happy camper.

You can leave the default calib. settings as they are. <no bigge>

As far as data rates are concerned I always tend to look at received signal levels and the manufacturer's thresholds and set my rates accordingly... for example if im getting -73, and that is the threshold for a 54mbit pipeline then I would set the data rate for that link to either 48 or 36 to avoid fluctuation as the signal level changes.... (all these options are found within the wireless tab under a given interface, the same place where you change essid ...etc.

Also I would recommend turning on nstreme (on both units) for whatever reason, with polling off(!).

Regards,
Watson

All my CPE's are already on 5MHz channel spacing. Changing to HPOL would take days as all clients will need to be changed. I guess I'll put that in mind as last resort (should of started with HPOL).

Since this CPE's received signal varies between -73 to -94dBm, I'll try the Supported and Basic Rate of 11Mbps for XR2.

I will also try nstreme w/o polling, but isn't it polling the whole purpose of nstreme? Nstreme thing is little too vague for me.

Thanks.

Do you have line of site between the AP and these clients?

Not a perfect LOS but near, there are few trees. But I have other CPE's that has more trees on it's way and has better signal rates.

I tried nstreme but it seems to disconnect more frequently.

I tried various Supported and Basic Rates. At some rates, it would not register. Seems that on default setting works best as when there's no activity, it stays at 6Mbps and jumps upto 36Mbps on activity.

One thing confuses me is, 5 or 10Mhz bandwidth, is this B/G or both modes? I'm using 5Mhz but the rates on G seems to take effect.
