Using ISP for internet/Wifi but keep routing through Mikrotik due to hap ax3 bad wifi throughput/performance

Fri Apr 07, 2023 7:05 pm

I have a hap ax3, but my current ISP wifi router is way faster, I've tried messing with ax3 settings but I'm not an expert, my ISP wifi I can get ~900mb using wifi but ax3 I can only get ~500mb, so based on that is how can I set up that all traffic goes through Mikrotik, in my mind, this should be the connections, I'm playing with some ideas, but asking here so maybe you guys have a better idea than mine (static routes/masquerade), I'd like that wired and wireless clients can communicate with each other too.

Wired Clients:

Client->Mikrotik->ISP-Router(Cable)->Internet

Wireless Clients:

Client->ISP-Router(Wifi)->Mikrotik->ISP-Router(Cable)->Internet

Thank's in advance.

Apparently the lack of performance is only in our imagination.
According to MT the default settings will get you amazing performance.
Reality differs however and until they actually provide a path to reach utopia, they should actually work far harder to
ensure users achieve success.

Thus far their support for wifi users has been a joke!

They have made choices about resource allocation and maintaining older hardware. The number of users who have issues with v7 on aging hardware is testament to this (and the godly patience of the people who reply to them on a daily basis).

To be fair, many manufacturers who have better Wifi numbers are using closed source proprietary bits to improve performance. Anyway, ax should perform better (I get those speeds on my aging ac device - I'm using an older firmware to maintain performance). On site interference makes it very difficult to compare results fairly...and mentioning that the drivers are lacklustre will get some people upset.

I would try different firmware versions and tweaking to improve things. Matching the ISP router on a 2+2 device is probably unrealistic...YMMV.

This post is not for complaining about ax3, I did all I could, and my main goal with this top is how to configure so I can have the best of my 2 routers.

Do a search for posts by user bpwl. Lots of advice already provided to tweak Wifi on MikroTik. If you don't provide your settings and how you obtained those results, not much more can be done. Wifi scanning software should be used.

BTW, did you turn off the Wifi on the ISP router before connecting the ax3 ?

Yes I did it, performance was the same, I don't use cli that much, what command do I need to run to show my configs?

Your wireless scenario is not possible unless you have an advanced ISP-router that you fully control.
Some "static routes" are not enough, this sound more like some policy-routing based on certain criteria.

The "wired" scenario is basic and will work.

ignoring the fact that fine-tuning your mikrotik should yield a really nice speed you should be able to do this if your modem supports custom switching. If you can set your modem to be on a specific port and separated from the wifi and the lan ports then you can use a double wire setup to your mikrotik, one for lan and one for wan.

I know a few fiber modems like the hg series from Huawei support this settings but beware as your ISP may be locking you out of being able to use this.

If you want to run extremely unsecured you may disable DHCP in the modem, use an additional static address in the mikrotik in the modem's common pool, and set everything else as you normally would on the mikrotik.

This is insecure because any device on the network that uses or gets an IP in the modem pool will be able to talk to it. Not ideal, not recommended, not suggested. But still doable.

I do have full control of it, but still some what limited, i.e: I cannot set a different gateway in the DHCP page :/

Mine is a Colix u6xw, I'm thinking of maybe buying a Ubiquiti U6 LongRange access point to have a better Wifi speed over my home (1994sqft 1 floor) and have it all in with ax3 and disable my router and mikrotik wifi.

Throwing money at your problem is not the smart way to fix your issues. I can easily get bad WiFi by not setting up my gear correctly and using auto. Plan your network and AP locations (even if it's one). Survey. Start again with other devices. Compare. Tweak. It's not an As**, defaults are not great for everyone. And MT is not known for easy. Also...

I'm going to test with 7.6 there are some reports about this being an OS problem, the router works great for me just not the wifi, I've mentioned an AP because that would be a fair comparison 4x4 x 4x4, since ax3 is 2x2

Another difference I noticed is that in AX mode the router is not using the 2.4ghz only 5ghz, and my tx-rate keep bouncing all over the place, but the isp router is always at 1200mbps
