Missing CAPS manager functionality in new router

Sun Oct 01, 2023 4:03 pm

I upgraded my RBD53iG-5HacD2HnD (hAP ac3) to the https://mikrotik.com/product/l009uigs_2haxd_in for faster wifi speeds 5->6 and extra ports.

#1 issue, caps-man is missing?!

When I search around I see https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:CAPsMAN and a mention of "wireless-cm2 package enabled/installed in order to make CAPsMAN v2 system to work".

I don't understand how to install this package or if it's applicable in my case. Is this my issue? Thank you in advance.

Here's is my hapAc3 config for reference https://github.com/kaihendry/mikrotik-c ... /praze.rsc

On wifiwave2 devices, capsman is an integrated part of the wireless menu structure.

https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... ve2CAPsMAN

PS You could have upgrade that AC3 to wifiwave2. Just add package and reboot.
L009 only has 2.4GHz wifi (wifi6).
AC3 with wifiwave2 has both (wifi5).
Even though it will not result in wifi6 connection, wifiwave2 behaves a lot better then legacy wifi IMHO.

I upgraded to wifiwave2 on my hap ac3 as you recommend and now wireless doesn't work. I guess because capsman interface has changed.
interface/wifiwave2> export
# 2023-10-01 14:50:25 by RouterOS 7.11.2
# software id = D555-50G3
#
# model = RBD53iG-5HacD2HnD
# serial number = E7290D45E8BC
/interface wifiwave2 security
add authentication-types="" disabled=no name=sec1
/interface wifiwave2 configuration
add country="United Kingdom" disabled=no name=cfg1 security=sec1 ssid=praze
/interface wifiwave2 capsman
# failed to create certificate: CA not found (4)
set ca-certificate=none enabled=yes
/interface wifiwave2 provisioning
add action=create-dynamic-enabled disabled=no master-configuration=cfg1
I can't find a datapath option, I'm trying to replicate https://github.com/kaihendry/mikrotik-c ... sc#L22-L25

Can you please advise?

It's a little weird now how capsman is buried under remote cap. Capsman is the main reason I recommend Mikrotiks and the UX has made further regressions.

That example you link to is for legacy capsman / wifi.
That will not work.
In wifiwave2 capsman there is also no central forwarding anymore, only local forwarding.

On device acting as cap, you don't specify datapath.
Only on the controller (there is a tab for it in the Wireless menu, hard to miss).

Check this page for better reference (CLI only but should be obvious where you need to go, with and without vlan)
https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... ionexample:

And ... if you are using that AC3 as controller AND AP, that will not work either in wifiwave2 capsman.
You need to configure the interfaces locally on that device.

How many APs are you controlling in that capsman controller ?
If only 1 to 4, it may be a lot easier to handle it locally per device (unless you consider it a learning project).
Just my view.
It's a little weird now how capsman is buried under remote cap. Capsman is the main reason I recommend Mikrotiks and the UX has made further regressions.
Personal opinion: I had little to no trouble getting used to wifiwave2 environment since it more or less took over the same structure from legacy capsman.
Set channels
Set Security
Set datapath (if needed)
Set config
Apply config to interface.

Not sure what is going wrong here...

Around my property I manage:
1. RB952Ui-5ac2nD
2. RBD52G-5HacD2HnD
3. RBmAPL-2nD
4. RBwAPG-5HacD2HnD-BE
5. Potentially the L009UiGS-2HaxD-IN

My goal is to get Caps Manager working first ASAP and then I'll locally configure the wifiwave2 devices. Nonetheless I manually setup the local hapAc3 to use the configuration yet the wifi doesn't show on my iphone :/

Mixing legacy and wifiwave2 devices is not a good idea.
If you want to use capsman, you would need 2 controllers in such an environment: 1 for legacy, 1 for wifiwave2.

So you may want to take a step back on that AC3 since all your other devices are legacy wifi (go to packages, select wifiwave2 and mark for uninstall, then reboot).
(would have been better to make that clear from the beginning).

L009, that's another problem. Since it has only wifiwave2 radio, you can not move down.
Actually, you can (remove wifiwave2 package) but then the wireless part of that device becomes disabled and that would be a pitty.

Your choice how to proceed.

Thank you. Whoa, what a painful migration. :/

I'd like to get wifiwave2 caps manager running between the controller on RBD53iG-5HacD2HnD & the L009UiGS-2HaxD-IN as a cap for testing but I get no connection and I don't know why.

Image

Sidenote: I've been using my iphone 13 pro to with https://fast.com/ to see if I notice a speed increase using wifiwave2 over the "legacy" and I can't. Is there a better method to test?

So it's not possible I gather to run both controllers on the hac ac3? crikey, what a shame. I guess I need to nominate an older device.
