DNS check

Thu Jan 03, 2008 6:43 pm

Hi is there any way to check if the dns are working from the winbox or console in routeros V3?
sometimes I have problems with my ISP and in my other server automatically says if the problem is with the DNS "DNS NOT RESPONDING"

how can I check this in MT when Im having connections problems to have this information when I call the support table of my ISP

the only thing I can do now is ping an address like http://www.google.com and if it doesnt resolv the host maybe Im having DNS problems, but it also could be connection problems with the isp gateway.

another thing I want to know is if I could add more DNS beside the Primary and Second, so if the ones from my ISP doesnt work, MT could use others from the web, for example have a list of 20 DNS address hoping 1 will always be up.

Thank everyone.

Make sure you have the latest version of RouterOS. They fixed a DNS issue a little while back.
Mikrotik RouterOS will only allow you to specify 2 DNS servers.
To do a DNS lookup from CLI or script enter this.

:put [:resolve http://www.google.com]

Naturally substituting http://www.google.com for whatever name you are looking to resolve.

where do I need to put that?

I paste ":put [:resolve http://www.google.com]" in a terminal window and it gave me prompt again, nothing happened.

Thank you.
