hap ax3 wifi problem

Fri Jul 12, 2024 9:04 pm

When I bought this router, I never was satisfied with wifi performances. 3m distance of the router with one door as a separator between rooms and signal is not full. Also internet get disconnecting really often. Sometimes when I turn on computer, I'm waiting 2 minutes to 5Ghz network be visible. I read some topics here on the forum and saw a lot of people are complaining on wifi. Is there any solution for this or this router is a garbage.

Unless your AP is somehow powered together with you PC on a single power strip you turn on with a red switch I would say: your PC is garbage as well.😉

I am wondering if he has DFS enabled by chance. Regardless, my crystal ball stopped working yesterday right after the warranty expired so the config is a must.

OP turns on his PC just when DFS hits his AP and starts a channel scan. Well while this sounds ridiculous, it might truly happen this way.
I've seen the weirdest events to be recognized as radar in the past. e.g. turning on wifi on tablet. Maybe the PC emits some weird signals as well on boot up causing false positive radar event.

My man, you have DFS enabled. Please change your DFS settings to ALL. Right now your AP is set to drop the wifi for 10 minutes if it detects a radar

frequency=5220-5280
Is limited to this frequency range. Lower one is non-dfs while 5250+ is subject to DFS.

I would use channels 5500+ because of higher tx power.

Well, depends on your RF environment.

Use
/interface/wifi/scan
and
/interface/wifi/spectral-scan
to see frequency utilization. Do one for each radio. Reading the results you can set an appropriate frequency or multiple.

Otherwise just use frequency=auto together with rescan-interval (e.g. "12h-24h") as a good start.

Router automatically added frequency 5745 and signal is really bad.

Try this. Set the 5 GHz to freq of 5240 with a width of 20/40. That's what I'm using and it serves me just fine.

Also please make sure the skip DFS setting is set to all.

Router automatically added frequency 5745 and signal is really bad.

Of course it is. Here are the regulatory power limits for Germany:

2402-2482/20
5170-5250/23/indoor
5250-5330/23/indoor/dfs
5490-5730/30/dfs
5735-5875/14

In short, you're screwed by your local regulations. It seems that the router is frequently turning off the wifi card, because it detects a radar event, which means you can't really use DFS channels. And the alternative channels suck in terms of power limitations. (14 dBm on 5735-5875! I produce more dBms in 5735-5875 MHz range when I fart!)

If you want to both have stable wifi and stay within regulatory limits for TX power, set frequency to 5180, 5200, 5220 or 5240. And if you just want to have stable wifi, well... consider moving to Brazil:

2402-2482/20
5170-5250/30
5250-5330/24/dfs
5490-5730/24/dfs
5735-5835/30

Looks a lot better, now, doesn't it?

I did it. Now it's much better, signal plus stability but never reach full speed. I have 1Gbps/50Mbps and only in front of the router I got this result:

That's about right for a 40 MHz channel I get 300 on mine. You can try to set it to 20/40/80 MHz and see how it works. 80 MHz will be faster but is more subject to interference and performance issues in noisy environments. So, for me, I'm fine taking a performance hit at the gain of better quality wifi. If I really need high bandwidth to move big files, I'll use a computer connected to a switch.

80 MHz will be faster but is more subject to interference and performance issues in noisy environments.

The real benefit of 80 MHz, IMO, is range with decent speed.

If you just look at MCS index real quick, you will see that, say, with 0.8us guard interval, you get 117 Mbps at an MCS index of 3 for 80 MHz, but you only get 121.5 Mbps at an MCS index of 6 for 40 MHz. It's just how radio science works: double the frequency range, double the bandwidth.

This means that, in terms of raw speed of the network, you can maintain a decent speed in a larger radius with 80 MHz than with 40 MHz.

Which it mightn't be required to do, and you should always consider your actual usecase (won't do much good for VoIP, which wants very low latency as opposed to very high speed). But if, per chance, you live in Europe, where it is quite common to have 500-year-old buildings with walls as thick as those of some high-security vaults, this might be the thing that takes you from "I can maybe read news articles in my kitchen, if I get lucky" to "hey, I can actually watch YouTube videos here relatively comfortably".

1. Did you set the width to 20/40?
2. Do you want full speed, or is it fine the way it is?
3. How about speeds in other places, far away from the router, but still in the house?

It might work like this close to AP, but not at some distance. Have a look at table in this article. AP is limited to certain EIRP and if using wider channel (e.g. 80MHz vs. 40MHz), the actual signal strength (RSSI is not; in e.g. LTE there's RSRP) gets lower (e.g. by 3dB). And SINR generally drops by same offset. So your MCS index 3 at 80MHz (with SINR required at 17) will become MCS4 (or even 5, most likely it'll alternate between the two) for 40MHz channel, so it'll be 117Mbps vs. something around 100Mbps.
And, when it comes to real devices, don't forget to check transmitter capabilities of your AP (e.g. hAP ax3 can Tx at 28dBm for MCS0 but only at 20dBm for MCS11) and receiver capabilities of your AP (same device has Rx sensitivity of -96dBm for MCS0 and only -67dBm for MCS11). Same info for client devices is usually not available, but I fon't see any good reason for them not to suffer from same effect.ž
So you can see that things are not simple at all ...

Still have the problem, just one wall behind the router and signal is not full. Distance is 4m. I tried all suggestions you shared here but not satisfied.

Tear down the wall, then?
5GHz and walls don't really work well together ...

You can not achieve max results with obstacles in between.
Ain't gonna happen.

I read somewhere the advice is usually to have a 5GHz radio per room for office environments.
You're not required to do so at home but then you need to accept a performance hit especially when that wall is constructed of material which really blocks wifi signals (concrete, brick, metal, ...).

If you have access to the loft space, try putting your router up there. You can usually then get it placed centrally which helps to spread WiFi evenly throughout the building. In a lot of older buildings the floors and ceiling are wood / plaster, WiFi passes through this a lot easier than it does through thick brick walls.

The last person we had this debate with was expecting his 2xcAP ax's to reach around his massive house outbuildings and garage.
Same person continued to slag off the product while buying more of a new product, it beggers belief it really does!

Or replace it with paper, like (old) Japanese houses :)

Joking aside, I just saw this https://www.everythingrf.com/tech-resou ... ides-sizes but I have no idea if installing some waveguides/drilling a few big holes though the wall (and covering them with wallpapers) would make any difference, and I am not in the mood to test that :D
